ABOUT THE ROLE
We're building a smart home program from the ground up for a fleet of prefabricated homes — and we need someone who can design it and build it. That means selecting devices, designing the control architecture, physically commissioning units at our Port Alberni fabrication site, and handing off a documented, repeatable system our trades team can run with.
The devices are straightforward — dimmable switches, remote-controlled outlets, occupancy-responsive thermostats, motion-triggered lighting — but they all need to talk to each other through a local-control hub and be operable through both a custom app and a physical wall panel. No cloud lock-in. Human-centered architecture.
This is a hands-on contract role. You will design the system, select the hardware, and do the physical installation and commissioning work alongside our design and trades teams.
THIS IS LIKELY A FIT IF YOUR BACKGROUND IS IN…
- Electrical or low-voltage wiring
- Lighting & mechanical controls (construction context)
- Home theatre / AV installation
- Building automation systems
- Smart home integration
Primarily IT or software development? This role probably isn't the right fit.
REQUIREMENTS
- Residential wireless protocols — strong working knowledge of Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi devices; familiarity with Matter and Thread
- Local-control hub experience (1+ years) — hands-on pairing, integration, and troubleshooting on Hubitat, Home Assistant, or comparable
- Networking fundamentals — VLANs, PoE, structured wiring, local IoT network design
- Platform configuration ability — sufficient scripting/programming knowledge to configure an open-standard platform, or the ability to manage/outsource that work
- Trades coordination — ability to work with electrical contractors during design and installation
- On-site availability — able to attend commissioning at our Port Alberni fabrication site
- Documentation skills — strong process-design and handoff documentation; the system needs to be repeatable across a fleet
- Location — BC preferred: Remote elsewhere in Canada acceptable for non-commissioning phases
NICE TO HAVE
- Device product line familiarity: Leviton, Aqara, Sinopé, Lutron, or Ubiquiti
- Security system integration, residential AV, or low-voltage background
- Matter ecosystem experience — Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings
- Mobile or web app development
- Multi-home or fleet deployment experience
- Familiarity with BC Building Code and BC Electrical Code
PROJECT SCOPE
Four milestones: design completion, factory commissioning, documentation, and final on-site install. This is an opportunity to shape a smart home program from the ground up — local-control architecture, no cloud lock-in, built to scale across a fleet.
HOW TO APPLY
Please send the following to: [email protected]
1. A paragraph summarizing relevant smart home or controls projects — including the protocols and hub platforms you've worked with. Bonus: one or two sentences on how you'd advise a builder choosing between Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Matter-over-Thread as a primary protocol for a fleet of homes built in 2026.
2. Your resume or LinkedIn profile.
