The Opportunity
Ontario Waste is looking for an experienced and highly dependable Operations Manager to take ownership of the company's day-to-day operations.
The owner is looking for someone with an ownership mentality—someone who is proactive, resourceful, accountable, and takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the business operates smoothly. This is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable working in the office, in the yard, on the road, and in the field.
The successful candidate will become the central point of contact for the company's day-to-day operations and will be responsible for ensuring that customers are looked after, drivers and routes are managed, vehicles and equipment are maintained, jobs are completed properly, and operational issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.
This is not a traditional desk-based management position. The Operations Manager will be expected to actively participate in the operation of the business and to do whatever is reasonably necessary to keep things running smoothly.
Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service and Administration
- Answer the company's main telephone line and respond to customer inquiries.
- Provide professional, responsive, and helpful customer service.
- Set up new jobs using Ontario Waste's proprietary company software.
- Ensure that job information, scheduling, pricing, and customer details are entered accurately.
- Prepare and issue customer invoices using the company's software.
- Track customer payments and accounts receivable.
- Follow up with customers regarding overdue payments and actively pursue late accounts.
- Resolve customer service issues and operational problems promptly and professionally.
Operations and Route Management
- Coordinate and oversee the company's daily operations.
- Set up and manage daily jobs, routes, and priorities.
- Manage and support company drivers.
- Ensure that routes and jobs are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Act as the primary point of contact for operational issues that arise during routes.
- Be available on call for route and operational issues from approximately 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., five days per week. (While the successful candidate will be expected to be available during these hours, calls requiring assistance are expected to be infrequent.)
- Make operational decisions and resolve issues independently whenever possible.
- Identify and implement ways to improve efficiency, service, and profitability.
Driving, Bins, and Field Work
- Hold and maintain a valid DZ driver's licence.
- Drop off and pick up garbage and junk bins.
- Perform junk removal and commercial cleanup jobs.
- Assist with garbage collection and operate garbage trucks as required.
- Perform a regular garbage route approximately one day per week.
- Occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 80 pounds.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Vehicle and Equipment Management
- Perform minor vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs in-house where appropriate.
- Monitor the condition of trucks, bins, and other company equipment.
- Identify maintenance issues before they become larger problems.
- Coordinate and take trucks and equipment to external service providers for larger repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate awareness of upcoming maintenance and repair requirements.
Facility and Yard Management
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional office, shop, and yard.
- Ensure that tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials are properly organized.
- Perform snow removal and other seasonal property maintenance as required.
- Take personal responsibility for maintaining a safe and functional work environment.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- A valid DZ driver's licence and a clean driving record.
- Experience in waste management, transportation, logistics, construction, fleet operations, or a related field.
- Experience managing drivers or field employees.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- The mechanical aptitude to perform minor vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- The ability to troubleshoot problems and make decisions independently.
- The physical ability to perform hands-on work, including lifting up to 80 pounds on occassion.
- The ability to work outdoors in all seasons.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn and use proprietary software.
- A high level of reliability, accountability, and personal initiative.

Compensation
- Salary: $75,000–$95,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
- Performance Bonus: Potential bonus of up to 10% of annual salary, paid in quarterly installments and based on performance.
- The bonus will reflect the employee's overall contribution to the successful operation of the business, including operational performance, customer service, employee and driver management, equipment and vehicle maintenance, administrative execution, reliability, and initiative.
