Position Summary
The Precast Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable day-to-day operation of the precast concrete plant, with direct accountability for both hollowcore (extruded or slipformed) and wetcast (formed structural and architectural) production lines.
Responsibilities
Production Leadership
- Direct daily production across hollowcore beds and wetcast forms to meet schedule
- Develop and enforce a master casting schedule that balances bed turn rates, form availability, crane time, curing windows, and shipping commitments.
- Lead daily production huddles, weekly planning meetings, and monthly operations reviews; report KPIs (yield, cycle time, scrap, downtime, on-time shipment) to senior leadership.
- Drive continuous improvement using Lean, 5S, root-cause analysis, and standard work; champion shop-floor initiatives that reduce cycle time and increase first-pass yield.
Hollowcore Production
- Oversee daily bed cycles including bed cleaning, strand pulling and tensioning, extruder/slipformer operation, sawing/coring/notching, lifting, and stockpiling.
- Manage prestressing operations to ACI 318, PCI MNL-116, and project-specific requirements; ensure stressing logs, elongation calculations, and de-tensioning procedures are followed and documented.
- Maintain and troubleshoot extrusion or slipform machines including auger/feeder wear, vibration tuning, mix consistency, and machine pace.
- Optimize zero-slump mix performance for green strength, surface finish, void quality, and release strength; coordinate with QC and the batch plant on aggregate gradation, moisture, and admixture adjustments.
- Manage cut-sheet generation, plank layout, camber tracking, and yard inventory of hollowcore product for efficient order picking and load building.
Wetcast Production
- Direct form setup, rebar and prestressing strand placement, embed and blockout installation, pour, consolidation, finishing, curing, stripping, and patch/repair for structural and architectural wetcast elements.
- Manage self-stressing beds, soffit forms, battery molds, and side forms for product families including inverted-tees, L-beams, rectangular beams, columns, double-tees, solid and sandwich wall panels, stair units, and architectural cladding.
- Ensure mix designs, slump/spread, air content, and temperature meet project specifications; coordinate with QC on cylinder breaks, match-cured specimens, and strip strength verification.
- Coordinate with engineering, drafting, and project management on piece tickets, embed schedules, and shop ticket changes; review and sign off on first-piece inspections for new products.
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a zero-incident safety culture; lead daily JSA/toolbox talks, monthly safety committee meetings, and incident investigations with corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain rigging, crane, forklift, and overhead bridge crane programs including operator certification, daily inspections, and load testing schedules.
- Drive hazard recognition for stressing operations, hot work, confined space (forms, voids), silica exposure, hot strand release, and concrete handling.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in precast/prestressed concrete operations, with at least 3 years in a plant or operations management role.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience running hollowcore production using extrusion or slipform technology.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience managing wetcast production of structural and/or architectural precast elements (beams, columns, walls, double-tees, stairs, panels).
- Working knowledge of prestressing operations, strand stressing logs, de-tensioning, and release strength requirements.
- Strong financial acumen
- Proficient with ERP/production scheduling systems (e.g., Tekla EPM, eCAD/eBOM, AS/400, JD Edwards, or similar) and Microsoft Office.
