The Yard Staff Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of yard labourers and ensuring assigned tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards. This position serves as a working supervisor, providing leadership, direction, training, and support to yard employees while reporting directly to the Yard Foreman.
- Direct and coordinate the daily activities of yard labourers.
- Assign work tasks and monitor completion to ensure productivity, quality, and operational standards are met.
- Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and support to employees.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Identify performance concerns and communicate them to the Yard Foreman and/or Human Resources.
- Assist in the onboarding and integration of new employees into the yard operations team.
- Ensure trailers, equipment, materials, and yard assets are organized, staged, and positioned as required.
- Assist with trailer spotting, equipment movement, loading and unloading activities, and general yard operations as needed.
- Monitor yard cleanliness, housekeeping, and overall organization.
- Ensure equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with company procedures.
- Train, mentor, and support new and junior yard staff on the safe and efficient operation of yard equipment, company procedures, and workplace safety requirements.
- Provide hands-on instruction, coaching, and ongoing performance feedback to promote employee development and operational success.
- Assess employee skills and competencies and identify training and development needs.
- Recommend employees for additional training, cross-training opportunities, and advancement within the organization.
- Support succession planning initiatives by identifying high-potential employees and assisting with their development.
- Promote and enforce company health and safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure employees are using required personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe work practices.
- Identify, report, and assist in the investigation of hazards, incidents, injuries, and near misses.
- Maintain regular communication with the Yard Foreman regarding staffing levels, operational issues, employee concerns, and workflow priorities.
- Provide updates on work progress, completed tasks, and operational challenges.
- Foster positive working relationships and effective communication among team members.
- Assist with employee timekeeping, and attendance tracking.
- Maintain accurate training and operational records as required.
- Previous experience in transportation, logistics, trucking, or yard operations.
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or team lead experience.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Experience operating yard equipment is considered an asset.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lead by example and promote a positive, safety-focused work environment.
