Tower Steel Buildings is growing and we are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Architectural Technologist / Architectural Designer to join our team full-time. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys bringing building concepts to life through accurate design, technical expertise, and project coordination.
You will play an important role in developing permit-ready drawing packages, supporting custom steel building projects, and guiding customers through the permitting process from concept to approval.
Position Summary
The Architectural Designer / Architectural Technologist will be responsible for preparing architectural and permit drawings, coordinating project details with internal departments and customers, obtaining building permits, and ensuring designs meet applicable building code and municipal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare architectural design packages, permit drawings, and construction documents for steel building projects
- Produce detailed plans, elevations, sections, and technical drawings
- Review and interpret customer requirements, sketches, and engineering specifications
- Ensure drawings comply with Ontario Building Code requirements and applicable municipal regulations
- Apply and maintain BCIN requirements and code compliance standards throughout project development
- Prepare, submit, and manage building permit applications with municipalities and authorities having jurisdiction
- Guide customers through the permitting process from initial application through permit issuance, providing updates and support throughout each stage
- Act as the primary contact for permitting-related communication with customers, municipalities, and internal departments
- Work directly with municipal planning and building departments, townships, and local authorities to address permit requirements and obtain approvals
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve permitting obstacles including zoning concerns, municipal comments, revision requests, incomplete submissions, and approval delays
- Coordinate revisions and gather required documentation to satisfy township and municipal review comments
- Maintain a strong understanding of township and municipal permitting procedures, submission requirements, timelines, and approval processes
- Coordinate with engineering, sales, estimating, production, and project teams
- Assist with revisions, design changes, and customer requests
- Maintain organized project files and documentation
- Participate in continuous improvement of drafting and design procedures
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Architectural Technology, Architectural Design, Building Technology, or related field
- Valid BCIN (Building Code Identification Number) – REQUIRED
- Minimum 5 years of experience in architectural design, drafting, permit preparation, or municipal approvals preferred
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and permitting processes
- Experience working directly with municipalities, townships, and authorities having jurisdiction is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience preparing and submitting permit applications and obtaining approvals
- Experience with steel building systems is considered an asset
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (required)
- Experience with Revit and/or other design software considered an asset
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and customer service abilities
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Compensation & Benefits
- $25.00–$28.00 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
