Independent Contractor, In-Person
Location: York University (Keele, Glendon and/or Markham Campus)
Hourly Rate: $35–$40 per hour
Schedule: Assignments vary by term and course; classes may occur between 8:30 AM and 10:00 PM, primarily on weekdays. Occasional weekend work may be possible.
Job Summary
York University is seeking reliable, detail-oriented Independent Contractors to provide real-time captioning and high-quality notetaking services for university-level courses. This role supports student accessibility and requires accuracy, professionalism, and strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
As a Real‑Time Captioner/Notetaker, you will:
- Attend assigned classes in person and provide accurate, real-time captioned notes.
- Capture lecture content, discussions and key concepts clearly and concisely.
- Deliver well-organized, readable notes promptly after each class.
- Communicate professionally with the program administrators, faculty, and students.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold accessibility best practices.
Qualifications
- Strong typing and real-time summarizing skills (at least 60 WPM).
- Excellent written English (spelling, grammar and clarity).
- Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines consistently.
- Ability to work independently and meet ongoing deadlines.
- Availability to attend classes in person according to a set schedule.
- Personal laptop and notetaking software required.
- Commitment to confidentiality and respectful, professional communication.
- Ability to accurately track hours and follow invoicing guidelines.
Assets:
- Transcription or professional notetaking certification
- Experience in Canadian post-secondary environments
- STEM background (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
- Fluency in French
Additional Information
- This is an Independent Contractor position. Contractors are responsible for all applicable taxes and remittances.
