The Assistant Controller leads accounting operations for a multi-site manufacturing organization and ensures divisional reporting complies with corporate policies, SOX requirements, and U.S. GAAP. The role supports timely close, accurate reporting, and strong internal controls across operations in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Mexico.This position oversees the General Accounting Clerk and a team of six in Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close Lead month-end close execution, including review/approval of journal entries and coordination of close timelines. Review account reconciliations and balance sheet accounts, and investigate and resolve discrepancies. Manage intercompany and related-party activity, including statements and reconciliations across entities. Oversee fixed assets and leases, including reconciliations and amortization calculations in accordance with policy and U.S. GAAP. Maintain SOX-aligned internal controls and drive continuous improvement across accounting processes.
Accounts Payable and Accounts ReceivableLead the Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable team (training, daily guidance, priorities) and maintain documented procedures.Oversee AP processing and payment runs, including invoice intake, coding, matching, approvals, posting, and disbursements.Oversee customer invoicing, credit memos, and cash application.Monitor AR aging, support credit decisions (limits/holds/releases), and coordinate collections with internal stakeholders.Maintain AP/AR controls and performance reporting, including segregation of duties, policy compliance, automation opportunities, and KPIs (e.g., DPO/DSO).
Tax & Corporate Risk Process U.S. and Canadian sales tax remittances in accordance with federal, state, and provincial requirements.Prepare and process monthly tax installment payments.Support income tax compliance (filings, reporting, and statutory requirements), as applicable.
Accounting Operations Leadership: Hire, mentor, and supervise accounting staff, aligning priorities and performance to business objectives.Develop team capability and support succession planning within the accounting function.
Ad hoc: Prepare ad hoc financial reports/special projects and complete Statistique Canada questionnaires, as requested.Drive ERP optimization and process automation initiatives.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (CPA required or strongly preferred).5+ years of progressive accounting experience. Experience in a publicly traded environment, including U.S. GAAP and SOX compliance.Experience managing accounting teams.Experience in a manufacturing, multi-site environment, including intercompany accounting and foreign currency translation.Strong communication skills with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders.
