Job Summary
The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Financial Controller and plays a key role in supporting both day-to-day accounting operations and financial analysis activities. In addition to core accounting responsibilities, this role focuses on cost accounting, inventory analysis, and margin analysis, providing insights to support operational and management decision-making. The position works closely with operations, supply chain, and finance to improve cost visibility, data accuracy, and process efficiency.
Duties
Core Accounting Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, journal entries, and bank reconciliations
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of schedules and reconciliations
- Maintain general ledger accuracy and supporting schedules
- Reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts and prepare adjusting entries
- Support payroll postings and employee expense tracking
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies
Cost Accounting & Analysis Focus
- Assist with inventory reconciliation, valuation, and variance analysis
- Perform cost analysis related to materials, labor, overhead, and production variances
- Support standard cost maintenance and periodic cost updates
- Analyze gross margin by product, customer, and channel, and investigate variances
- Partner with operations to understand production drivers and identify cost-saving opportunities
- Prepare analytical reports to support budgeting, forecasting, and management reviews
Collaboration & Process Improvement
- Work cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, and sales to resolve accounting and cost-related issues
- Help improve data integrity, reporting efficiency, and ERP utilization
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and coverage support during team absences
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting strongly preferred)
- Minimum 3-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing or inventory-based environment
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial and operational data
- Solid understanding of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE)
- Experience with cost accounting concepts (standard costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation) is strongly preferred
- Proficiency with ERP systems (Business Central experience is a strong asset)
- Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with large data sets
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across functions
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset
Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
