Position Summary
The Engineering Manager leads Algonquin Bridge’s engineering function, combining hands-on structural design and professional practice (including reviewing, sealing/stamping, and issuing letters of certification) with people leadership, coaching, and development of a high-performing engineering team. This role ensures safe, code-compliant, efficient and competitive designs for Algonquin Bridge’s modular panel bridge systems, custom prefabricated bridge solutions, and bridge abutment systems, while partnering closely with Sales, Operations and Project teams to deliver turn-key engineered bridge/abutment packages. This position reports to the President, Algonquin Bridge & AIL Soundwalls
Key Responsibilities
A) Design Leadership & Professional Practice

Act as Engineer-of-Record where required, guiding structural design and checking from concept through construction deliverables.

Review and seal drawings, calculations, specifications, and letters of certification in applicable Canadian jurisdictions;

Act as responsible member and maintain company permits in all registered provinces. Maintain professional practice records.

Establish and continuously improve engineering standards, templates, tools, and design/check/review workflows for consistency and quality.

Interpret and apply applicable design codes/standards and client specifications; support internal training on code requirements and best practices.

Provide technical direction and final review for complex designs and non-standard conditions; engage external experts as needed.

Ensure constructability and safe erection/installation methods are considered; define design and installation procedures where applicable.
B) People Management, Coaching & Development

Lead, mentor and develop the engineering team (engineers, EITs, designers/drafters) through objectives, feedback, performance management, and career development plans.

Build and sustain a culture of accountability, collaboration, psychological safety and continuous learning.

Support recruitment, onboarding, workload planning, and succession planning to meet business demands and grow capability.

Promote professional development (P.Eng. competency development, EIT mentorship, technical training, leadership development).

Champion health & safety, quality, and ethical practice within Engineering and across the business.
C) Project Delivery & Cross-Functional Support

Partner with Sales on pursuits: feasibility input, value engineering, and project cost estimating.

Oversee preparation, review and sign-off of contract drawings and documents supporting proposals and contract execution.

Provide technical support to owners/consultants/contractors, including presentations and technical correspondence.

Support site advisor activities and field problem-solving to assist launching/erection and installation challenges.

Provide technical support to Operations/Production to reduce rework and improve throughput.
D) Innovation, R&D & Market/Code Engagement

Champion product innovation to enhance performance, manufacturability, and ease of installation.

Contribute to R&D initiatives; evaluate new details, materials, and methods.

Analyze competitor products and industry trends to strengthen technical/commercial advantage.

Participate on code/technical committees representing Algonquin Bridge’s interests.
E) Planning, Budgets & Reporting

Prepare/manage engineering budgets by projecting resource needs and determining funding priorities.

Track capacity, cycle times, and quality metrics; report status, risks, and improvements directly to the President.

Maintain/improve document control practices for engineering deliverables, calculations, standards and templates.
Qualifications & Experience

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed in all provinces (or eligible), with demonstrated experience acting as Engineer-of-Record and sealing structural deliverables.

Minimum 8+ years of Civil/Structural Engineering experience; steel structures/bridge experience is an asset.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) required.

Proven people leadership experience (coaching, performance management, team development, culture building).

Strong knowledge of Canadian engineering standards and relevant design codes; ability to apply client specifications.

Demonstrated ability to optimize designs and product costs to win work while meeting safety and quality requirements.

Strong communication and presentation skills; able to explain technical concepts to non-engineers.

Proficient with modern design software (RISA 3D, Midas Civil, IdeaStatica would be an asset), and drawing tools (ACAD, Solidworks); excellent problem-solving and project/time management skills.
