Mechanical Engineering Intern - Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Intern supports the engineering team in the design, development, testing, and documentation of mechanical products and systems. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, the intern applies engineering principles to assist with product development, prototype evaluation, manufacturing support, and continuous improvement initiatives. This position provides practical experience in mechanical design, CAD modelling, engineering analysis, and cross-functional collaboration within a fast-paced engineering environment.
Work Environment
This position typically involves a combination of office-based engineering work and time spent in manufacturing, testing environments. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when working in production areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, and systems.
- Create and modify 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings using software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Prepare engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and design reports.
- Support prototype assembly, testing, and validation activities.
- Conduct engineering calculations and basic simulations to evaluate design performance.
- Assist in troubleshooting manufacturing and assembly issues.
- Participate in design reviews and recommend improvements based on testing and analysis.
- Work closely with manufacturing, quality, procurement, and production teams to support product development.
- Research materials, components, and industry standards to support engineering projects.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, and company procedures.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and revision control.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering degree program at an accredited university.
- Eligible for a co-op or internship placement.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and assembly.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings and GD&T is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Skills
- Hands-on experience with prototyping or machine shop equipment.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
- Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems.
Pay: $57,227.15-$127,549.99 per year
