Computing Science Laboratory Instructor
Full-time August – May, Continuing
POSITION SUMMARY
The Computing Science Laboratory Instructor provides laboratory instruction and student support for selected
Computing Science courses under the supervision of the faculty member in charge. This role assists with the
preparation, coordination, and maintenance of laboratory assignments, supports students using the
Computing Science computing environment, and helps maintain and monitor lab systems and resources. This
position is 9 months from Mid- August to Mid-May each year.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Laboratory teaching under the supervision of a faculty member, the discipline depending upon the
qualifications of the incumbent. Such teaching duties include laboratory presentations, assisting
students during lab times, running help sessions, scheduling office hours, and marking.
- Teaching load of 4 laboratories per term (Fall/Winter) or 2 laboratories and a lecture depending on
the needs of the department and the qualifications of the incumbent.
- Develop and maintain innovative laboratory activities that support the pedagogical goals of the
computing science program.
- Supervision of undergraduate student assistants who are appointed to assist the instructor with
laboratory preparation, teaching, and cleanup.
- Support for CS Linux accounts: creation of new accounts at the start of the semester; annual removal
of expired accounts; and support for student account access issues during the semester.
- Maintaining regular office hours to provide support for the CS Laboratory environment.
- Management of the online CS submission infrastructure: creating courses, creating submission
repositories, and fetching submissions for laboratory assignments.
- Proctoring of laboratory exams and assisting other exams as needed.
- Responsible for ordering and maintaining the inventory of course related Computing Science
materials.
- Serve on University Committees on an ad hoc basis as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum B.Sc. in Computing Science; M.Sc. preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to convey complex CS concepts
to undergraduate students.
- Experience administrating a Linux/Unix laboratory is desirable.
- Experience with software repositories (specifically git) is desirable.
