Community Inclusion Coach (CIC)
Help a remarkable young man build the life he wants.
We're looking for one or two creative, energetic Community Inclusion Coaches to join a small, collaborative team supporting N, a young man with autism who is building an active, meaningful life in his community.
If you believe everyone deserves friendship, belonging and the opportunity to pursue their dreams, this may be the perfect role for you.
This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in one person's life while enjoying meaningful work, supportive teammates and plenty of fun along the way.
About N
N is a warm, funny and determined young man with autism who is continually expanding his independence and participation in the community. He enjoys music, movies, shopping, drum circles, beaches, pub nights, aquafit, Zumba, fitness programs, hiking, biking and, most of all, kayaking. He is always open to discovering new interests and experiences.
You’ll play an important role in helping N achieve his goals, while building up his self- confidence, relationships, and key life skills.
The Role
As N's Community Inclusion Coach, you'll provide individualized, person-centred support both at home and throughout the community.
Every day is different. One day you might be helping N develop life skills, volunteering in the community or exploring a new activity. Another day you could be supporting him at his volunteer role, joining him on a hike, attending a drum circle or helping strengthen relationships with friends, neighbours and other members of the community.
This position offers considerable independence while also being part of a highly collaborative team. We believe the best outcomes happen when everyone shares ideas, celebrates successes and learns together. We are looking for someone who wants to become part of a team committed to helping N live a good and full life.
Your employers will be N's parents. Funding for this position is provided directly to the family by Community Living BC (CLBC), allowing for a flexible, person-directed approach that focuses entirely on supporting N's goals and interests.
Supporting N
N understands verbal language very well. His spoken communication is minimal, and can be supported by referring to visuals or using his iPad. He requires additional processing time to demonstrate his understanding of a concept, or his execution of a task. Successful support workers are patient, observant and skilled at adapting communication and breaking complex tasks into manageable steps.
You'll receive training and ongoing support from the team, and you'll quickly learn the strategies that help N thrive.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Coaching and mentoring N in developing greater independence and life skills
- Supporting community participation, recreation, and volunteering (potentially employment)
- Building natural supports and meaningful community relationships
- Researching and planning activities based on N's interests and goals
- Maintaining daily documentation and communication records
- Participating in regular team meetings and collaborative planning
- Assisting with personal care if required
We're Looking For Someone Who Is...
- Patient, encouraging and adaptable
- An excellent communicator and active listener
- Creative, resourceful and enjoys solving problems
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating with a supportive team
- Passionate about inclusion, equity and neurodiversity
- Reliable, positive and willing to learn
- Comfortable assisting with personal care if needed
A sense of humour and a spirit of adventure are definite assets!
Qualifications
Required
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (fee reimbursed)
Assets
- Experience working, volunteering or living alongside individuals with autism or developmental disabilities
- Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools and communication apps
- Currently enrolled in or graduated from a related post-secondary program (education, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, recreation therapy, nursing, behaviour intervention or similar)
- Valid BC Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle (helpful but not required)
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and life experiences and believe the right attitude, curiosity and willingness to learn are often more important than extensive experience.
