Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Forth Engineer or higher for tugs up to 500 GT. If you’re an experienced Engineer who’s interested in joining a great team, becoming part of Hodder could be for you!
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Company and/or Master and being responsible for duties of Engineer on Watch.
- Perform maintenance, inspections and overhaul of machinery as directed by the Company and/or Master.
- Independently Performing watches in Engine Control Room or Engine Room.
- Maintain and update company planned maintenance system.
- Understand and adhere to pollution regulations.
- Update and maintain logbooks, maintenance records, oil record book and spares inventory.
- Supervise and delegate work to Oilers on their watch, when required.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Muster List, emergency duties, Vessel Emergency Plan, and SMS training manual.
- Ensure that the vessel’s maintenance program is implemented and maintained
- Ensure that adequate engine room stores, supplies and spare parts are available on board for the intended voyage
- Utilize software to track and report on daily activities
- Understand and adhere to Company policies including the uniform policy, the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Policy, Smoke Free Workplace Policy, and Collective Agreements.
Required
- Valid Certificate of Competency as a 4th Class Engineer or higher.
- Valid Seafarers Medical Certificate and all other relevant certificates required to maintain CoC.
- Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
- MED A1 (Marine Emergency Duties Basic Safety).
- Marine Basic First Aid (Marine Advanced First Aid preferred).
- Valid Canadian and Marine US passport (if required for operations).
- Eligibility to work in Canada and travel to US.
- Working knowledge of critical operations and SMS documentation.
- Experience with twin-screw tugboats.
- Vessels operating on the BC Coast and Fraser River;
- Conventional diesel propulsion and auxiliary systems.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proven track record of safe operations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to meet Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol testing requirements.
- Clean criminal record check.
Preferred
Experience with:
- Hydraulic systems;
- Generators and electrical systems;
- Cooling and fuel systems;
- Preventive maintenance programs and planned maintenance systems.
Familiarity with:
- Engine room record keeping and defect reporting;
- Environmental compliance and pollution prevention requirements.
Ability to work rotational schedules and participate in emergency response drills.
Working Conditions
- Shift schedules and rotations are governed by the Collective Agreement and operational requirements.
- Work is performed outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- Schedule rotations are subject to operational requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
Employees are hired under the applicable Collective Agreement with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG).
