At Artemis Huron, previously Huron Women’s Shelter, we use a gender-based analysis (GBA+), trauma and violence informed framework to deliver prevention, education, crisis support and healing programs to women and their families who have been impacted by gender-based violence (GBV) in rural Huron County. Our services include a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter, risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy, system navigation, individual and group healing opportunities, and community development.
We are seeking a Maintenance Assistant (Summer Staff) to join our team. This role works within our Maintenance Department and supports throughout our 4 locations across Huron County.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Manager of Maintenance and Facilities, the Maintenance Assistant (Summer Staff) is accountable for contributing to a safe and efficient operation of the organization’s properties and day-to-day upkeep including supporting with performing maintenance, repairs and landscaping.
The Maintenance Assistant (Summer Staff) works within the organization contributing to a healthy and welcoming environment to support a woman and her family impacted by gender-based violence.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
1. Supports health and safety requirements, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs across buildings, units, and equipment, while preparing residential spaces for new clients through cleaning, repairs, and basic renovations. Maintains upkeep, including cleaning common areas, managing waste, and ensuring the overall environment is safe, functional, and welcoming.
2. Supports the maintenance and upkeep of building exteriors through tasks such as cleaning eaves, washing windows, and assisting with exterior painting. Maintains agency properties and landscaping by trimming branches, cleaning storm debris, and caring for gardens, including mulching, managing flowerbeds, and weed trimming.

Location
The Maintenance Assistant (Summer Staff) typically works in a residential and office environment, along with the exterior properties, supporting across our 4 locations throughout Goderich, Clinton and Exeter.
Hours
The Maintenance Assistant (Summer Staff) works a standard workweek of 35 hours/week for an 8-week contract. Typical working hours are weekdays, but may be required to work the occasional evening and/or weekend dependent on program need.
What You Bring to the Role
· Basic understanding of building maintenance and minor repairs
· Familiarity with hand tools (screwdrivers, drills, etc.) and demonstrates safe operation
· Awareness and understanding of workplace safety practices
· Computer savvy with the ability to navigate computer technology and applications
· Strong ability to communicate and collaborate
· Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
· Strong communications, listening and assessment skills
· Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
· Fluency in other languages (an asset)
Qualifications
· Completed or currently enrolled in post-secondary education in Building Maintenance or an appropriate trade, or related education and experience.
· Employment or life experience in building maintenance or trades is considered an asset.
· Valid driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle.
· Clear current Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.
· Valid CPR Level C, First Aid.
· This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program; therefore, the incumbent must be:
· Between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
· A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
· Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
