- Assist with renewal preparation by reviewing loss history, identifying changes in risk profile, and flagging items for senior review
- Process endorsements, mid-term changes, cancellations, and renewals accurately and in accordance with underwriting guidelines
- Verify that policy wordings and coverages accurately reflect the exposures identified during the assessment process
- Apply internal rating tools and pricing guidelines to calculate premiums based on risk characteristics and exposure data
- Follow up on outstanding underwriting information, documentation, and policy subjectivities with brokers
- Order and follow up on risk inspections, attach completed reports, and action recommendations as directed
- Respond to broker and client inquiries in a timely and professional manner
- Prepare and present underwriting rationale on new business and renewals
- Support the team in maintaining and growing broker relationships
- Refer risks that fall outside established authority levels to senior underwriters for review and approval
- Ensure all files, decisions, and workflows adhere to underwriting guidelines, service standards, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation in the policy management system
- Partner with actuary, claims, and accounting teams on referrals, file reviews, and process improvement initiatives
- Participate in cross-functional discussions to develop a broader understanding of how portfolio decisions are made across the business
- Up to 2 years of commercial underwriting experience (new graduates welcome)
- General Insurance License Level 1 or 2 (or willingness to obtain within 90 days, on us)
- Post-secondary education and/or CIP designation (considered an asset)
- Eagerness to learn commercial property & casualty underwriting practices and market fundamentals
- Strong communicator and collaborative team player with a drive to grow
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working across all levels, including brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
- Analytical mindset with a curiosity for problem-solving and evaluating information
- High level of attention to detail, organization, and ability to prioritize tasks
Within six months, you are building confidence as an underwriting contributor. Managing a portfolio of straightforward to moderately complex commercial risks, making guideline-based decisions with growing independence, and establishing credible relationships with brokers and clients.
- Assess and underwrite new and renewal business with increasing technical accuracy under the guidance of senior underwriters
- Develop competitive, well-structured pricing and policy terms within established guidelines and risk appetite
- Build responsive, professional relationships with brokers and clients
- Collaborate with claims and actuarial teams to support informed underwriting decisions
- Manage priorities and deadlines effectively in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrate continued growth in underwriting judgment and a readiness to take on more complex risks over time
