Job Summary
The Food Safety Manager is responsible for leading supplier compliance, food safety programs, regulatory activities, and technical quality initiatives across a diverse portfolio of food products. This role supports supplier qualification, risk management, product compliance, and customer requirements while ensuring adherence to Canadian and U.S. food safety regulations.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in food safety, supplier management, regulatory compliance, and quality systems, while partnering with internal and external stakeholders to support business objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.
Core Responsibilities
Supplier Compliance & Risk Management
- Lead supplier qualification, approval, and ongoing monitoring programs.
- Review and assess supplier documentation including HACCP plans, food safety certifications, specifications, allergen declarations, Certificates of Analysis (COAs), and audit reports.
- Conduct supplier and product risk assessments to support sourcing and compliance decisions.
- Partner with suppliers to address food safety concerns, corrective actions, and compliance gaps.
- Maintain supplier records and documentation in accordance with internal and customer requirements.
Food Safety & Technical Support
- Evaluate technical documentation, microbiological specifications, and laboratory results to ensure product compliance and food safety.
- Support ingredient, allergen, and nutritional compliance requirements for Canadian and U.S. markets.
- Provide technical guidance to commercial, procurement, and operations teams.
- Assist with customer requests related to food safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor emerging food safety and regulatory developments affecting products and suppliers.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Systems
- Support compliance with CFIA, FDA, SFCR, FSMA, and customer-specific requirements.
- Participate in internal audits, supplier assessments, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain food safety procedures, technical standards, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure documentation systems remain organized, accurate, and audit-ready.
Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Support cross-functional projects related to food safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and supplier performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, documentation workflows, and compliance programs.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives that strengthen supplier quality and food safety performance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Food Safety, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in food safety, quality assurance, supplier quality, regulatory affairs, or technical services within the food industry.
- Experience managing supplier approval and compliance programs.
- Strong understanding of HACCP, GMPs, GFSI standards, SFCR, FSMA, FSVP, and food safety regulations.
- Experience reviewing technical documentation, specifications, audit reports, and food safety records.
- Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. food labelling and regulatory requirements is an asset.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- HACCP, PCQI, SQF, BRCGS, or related certifications are considered assets.
Compensation
- $90,000 – $105,000
