Construction Safety Coordinator
Reporting to the Corporate Safety Manager, the construction safety coordinator will advise, educate, and enforce company health and safety policies and work procedures. This position works with the field management and with Corporate Safety Manager to complete accident investigations to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel and third parties.
This is a multi-site position with the potential to be project placement.
Duties and responsibilities
- Administers all aspects of the company occupational health and safety program.
- Develops programs and technical guidance to identify and remove hazards from facilities, operations, and sites.
- Assists supervisors in the health and safety training of workers.
- Conducts inspections to identify unsafe conditions or work practices. Completes written reports of inspections.
- Recommends programs and activities that will develop and maintain incentives for and motivation of workers in health and safety.
- Disciplines workers or subcontractors for violations of the health and safety rules.
- Investigates all accidents/incidents, obtains all pertinent data, and initiates/takes corrective and preventative action.
- Develops and maintains accident and incident investigation and reporting procedures and systems. Investigates serious or reportable incidents and accidents and takes action to eliminate the causes.
- Conducts an annual corporate review of the Health and Safety Program.
- Conducts an annual audit of the effectiveness of the Health and Safety Program.
- Supports the implementation and enforcement of Hot Work Permit protocols as per the company Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- Ensures WHMIS compliance and maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in all active work areas.
- Supports site-wide Field Ergonomics Safe Work Procedures (SWP), including evaluation of manual handling practices, repetitive motion tasks, and worker posture awareness.
- Conducts Behavior-Based Observations (BBOs) to proactively identify unsafe behaviors and reinforce Safe Work Practices and Safe Work Procedures.
- · Actively contribute to and promote our safety culture through field presence, safety meetings, mentorship, and ongoing collaboration with crews and leadership
- Support field teams by facilitating toolbox talks, conducting hazard assessments, and delivering training on safety procedures and legislative compliance (e.g., OH&S, NSC, COR)
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify and address potential hazards, providing immediate corrective action where required
- Participate in incident investigations, gather reports and documentation, and support the implementation of corrective measures and modified work placements
- Collaborate with supervisors and foremen to support safety planning, documentation, and project-specific safety strategies
- Provide support for COR and OH&S compliance efforts, including audit participation and ongoing documentation review
- Assist in internal safety committee initiatives, project pre-qualifications, and external communications related to safety
- Develop, refine, and maintain practical safety documentation including checklists, procedures, inspection forms, and training materials
- Identify opportunities to improve existing safety systems, tools, or training materials, and support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives
- Serve as a credible safety advisor to project teams, offering field-level coaching and contributing to operational decision-making with a safety first
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including participating in safety presentations, pre-job meetings, and client-facing safety discussions
Education & Experience Requirements:
- NCSO Certification or equivalent, mandatory
- Required Health and Safety courses, including, LSE, fall protection, injury management, WHMIS, and fit test trainer.
- Minimum First Aid Level 2 certification
- Minimum 3 year's experience in Concrete Formwork health and safety
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in health and safety in the construction industry
- Experience with tower crane safety
Qualifications
- Good computer skills
- MS Excel and MS Word
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Education in Occupational Health and Safety or Risk Management
- Working knowledge of AB Occupational Health and Safety Act legislation and regulations
- Able to create site specific Safe Work Procedures
- High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
- Demonstrated competence in the areas of safety, people management, project execution, cost control, quality and administration
- Sound knowledge of construction and building techniques and ability to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications, an asset
- Proactive problem-solver that can manage difficult situations with positive result.
- Ability to speak and write in Spanish is an asset but not mandatory
