Position Overview:
The Landfill Compliance Supervisor ensures that all landfill operations performed by the Contractor meet the environmental, regulatory, contractual and safety requirements established by the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) and applicable provincial authorities. This position oversees compliance programs related to environmental monitoring, reporting, health and safety, quality assurance and operational procedures for the three sites. The Compliance Supervisor works closely with operations, administration and senior management to verify that daily activities align with regulatory permits, solid waste management plans and industry best practices.
Responsibilities include managing inspections, audits, documentation, training, and corrective actions to maintain full compliance and reduce environmental and operational risks. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving, ensuring a transparent, well-documented, and compliant landfill operation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee compliance with all regulatory permits, approvals, and contractual requirements.
- Conduct regular site inspections to identify environmental, safety, and operational compliance issues.
- Coordinate environmental monitoring programs (leachate, landfill gas, surface water).
- Review monitoring data and ensure timely submission of regulatory reports.
- Lead or assist with internal and external compliance audits.
- Develop and oversee corrective action plans for any deficiencies identified.
- Ensure proper documentation of inspections, incidents, and regulatory interactions.
- Work with operations staff to implement best management practices.
- Provide compliance training to site employees.
- Monitor and verify waste screening, prohibited materials identification, and recordkeeping.
- Support emergency response and spill reporting processes.
- Maintain compliance-related SOPs and update them as needed.
- Liaise with the Regional District and regulatory agencies regarding compliance matters.
- Review contractor and subcontractor activities for adherence to compliance standards.
- Participate in safety meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing landfill operations and staff.
- Engineering or environmental degree/background preferred.
- Must maintain certification as a Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) through the SWANA Pacific Chapter.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations, landfill operations and safety standards.
- Excellent organizational, communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain detailed documentation.
- Proficient with regulatory reporting and compliance tracking.
