Job Summary
Based out of Bow Island, AB. The Health & Safety Officer role involves developing and implementing policies with the goal of eliminating the risk of accidents in the workplace and construction sites. The H&SO is responsible for keeping policies up to date, ensuring safety standards are met, and establishing new ones when required. The H&SO is also expected to maintain safety in all areas of the business with proactive education for staff and sub-trades along with investigating any perceived unsafe practices or incidents that may occur in the workplace.
The Health & Safety Officer agrees to perform all duties and responsibilities customarily associated with this position and any other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Employer from time to time.
General Roles & Responsibilities
- Develop and review safety policies and procedures.
- Advise / educate all staff of their responsibilities under the Alberta OH&S Act, Regulations and Code.
- Provide advice and information to management regarding health and safety.
- Review safety reports and identify areas of improvement to ensure high safety standards.
- Conduct and document workplace and construction site inspections.
- Report all unsafe practices and manage workplace and construction site investigations.
- Assist management and supervisors with WCB claim management.
- Develop and maintain the subcontractor pre-qualification program.
- Ensure all required toolbox meetings, hazard assessments and other site reporting is completed as required with the support of management.
- Complete safety prequalification for new and potential sub-contractors.
- Provide support and training employees and trade workers in completing the required safety paperwork.
- Research, plan, organize, and conduct training programs on safety issues.
- Ensure Jayco Builders’ safety program meets all health and safety and COR standards.
- Perform internal COR audits and rectify any deficiencies identified.
- Prepare and at times participate in all external safety audits.
- Maintain vehicle and driver files to ensure compliance with Alberta Transportation.
- Review safety documentation to confirm completion and compliance.
- Organize the vehicle and trailer maintenance including annual commercial vehicle inspections.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are routinely inspected and safe for use.
- Organize and conduct monthly company-wide safety meetings with all staff.
- Conduct and document onboarding of new employees.
- Prepare and submit insurance applications for new projects.
- Assist with vehicle registrations and insurance requirements.
- Manage vehicle and commercial insurance claims.
- Abide by all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations in the performance of his/her duties.

COR Certification Support & Compliance
- Prepare and organize all required documentation and submissions for internal and external COR audits.
- Ensure all aspects of the company's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) are compliant with Alberta OHS legislation and COR standards.
- Track, review, and close out audit findings and corrective actions.
- Maintain documentation and processes necessary to ensure COR certification remains in good standing.
Field-Level Safety Management
- Conduct regular job site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments on heavy earthworks and construction projects.
- Identify potential hazards, evaluate risk, and implement control measures.
- Monitor and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazard-specific controls.
Training and Engagement
- Deliver health and safety orientations for new hires and subcontractors.
- Lead toolbox talks monthly, tailgate meetings, and safety training sessions.
- Promote worker involvement in the safety program and foster a culture of safety accountability and awareness.
Incident Management
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and safety concerns, and develop reports with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Ensure timely follow-up on action items and maintain records of all incidents.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain comprehensive records of inspections, training, meetings, and safety metrics.
- Provide regular safety performance reports to management and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Advisory and Regulatory Updates
- Serve as an internal resource for current OHS legislative requirements, industry best practices, and safety innovations.
- Assist with the development and updating of safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.

Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
