About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 82-year-old gentleman experiencing cognitive decline following a stroke in October 2020. He has recently experienced a rapid decline in mobility, now requiring assistance with balance and walking. He uses a walker but is still adjusting to it. He lives at home with his 81-year-old wife, who has been his primary caregiver and needs relief and support. The client has significant incontinence issues, wears adult diapers, and requires help with personal hygiene and toileting. He has sensitive skin requiring special care products, experiences alternating constipation requiring management, has no teeth or dentures requiring a soft/blended diet, and enjoys activities like playing Scrabble to stay mentally engaged.
Responsibilities:
- Provide hands-on assistance with personal care including toileting, hygiene, and managing incontinence with dignity and respect
- Help with bathing/showering, ensuring skin care protocols are followed for sensitive areas
- Assist with mobility support, transfers, and walking with walker
- Prepare and serve soft meals and blended foods appropriate for someone without teeth
- Light meal preparation including soups, crackers, and dinner assistance
- Provide cognitive engagement through activities like board games and conversation
- Perform light housekeeping including tidying common areas and kitchen cleanup
- Take out garbage and handle other household tasks as needed
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Provide companionship and emotional support
- Communicate regularly with family about any changes or concerns
- Accompany client and spouse to medical appointments when needed (spouse drives, caregiver provides physical support)
What We're Looking For:
- Experience with clients who have cognitive impairment and memory changes
- Comfortable with full personal care including toileting and incontinence management
- Ability to assist with mobility and transfers safely
- Patient, calm demeanor with someone adjusting to increased care needs
- Takes initiative and notices when something is off
- Reliable and consistent presence the family can count on
- Makes the client feel comfortable and respected
- Strong communication skills with both client and family
- Willing to help with light household tasks and meal preparation
- English speaking
- Comfortable working alongside the client's spouse who will be present in the home
Schedule:
Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This schedule provides consistent evening support including dinner preparation, showering, and bedtime routine, while giving the primary caregiver spouse much-needed respite. Flexibility for occasional additional hours for medical appointments appreciated but not required.
