About shōmi!
shōmi! is a leading Canadian manufacturer of fully custom visual displays, structures, and experiential environments. With over 20 years of experience, we have built one-of-a-kind installations for some of the world's largest companies — spanning tradeshows, retail rebrands, experiential marketing activations and more.
We are passionate experts dedicated to bringing ambitious creative visions to life through expert craftsmanship and innovative fabrication. At shōmi!, no two projects are the same. We embrace complex builds, thrive under pressure, and hold ourselves to the highest standards of quality — every single day.
Our core values: We Have Integrity. We Care. We Are Innovative. We Are Excellent.
Why Join Us?
We value originality, craftsmanship, and collaboration above all else. If you've built sets for a major film production, constructed immersive environments for a brand activation, or crafted intricate custom pieces that pushed the limits of what's possible — you'll feel right at home here. We support artistic expression, celebrate problem-solving, and take real pride in making things that have never been made before.
The Role
We're looking for a skilled, adaptable, and creative builder who lives for custom work. This is not a production-line carpentry role — it is hands-on, concept-driven fabrication across a wide range of materials, scales, and industries. From tradeshow structures to intricately detailed experiential installations, you'll be helping turn complex design briefs into physical reality.
Key Responsibilities
▸ Fabricate fully custom structures, displays, and installations from design drawings and creative briefs — this is bespoke build work, not standard production carpentry
▸ Work across diverse project types including tradeshow exhibits, experiential marketing environments, retail installations, branded pop-ups, and large-scale visual displays
▸ Interpret and execute complex creative concepts in close collaboration with designers and project managers
▸ Work with a wide variety of materials: plywood, hardwoods, MDF, particle board, metals, acrylics, foam, laminates, and specialty finishes
▸ Problem-solve actively during the build process — finding smart, practical solutions when design intent meets real-world constraints
▸ Hold yourself to the highest standards of precision, quality, and craftsmanship across every project
▸ Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment at all times
▸ Communicate clearly in both written and verbal English when coordinating project details or reporting on progress
▸ Assist with on-site installation and setup of completed builds as required
Qualifications
▸ 3+ years of professional experience in custom fabrication, set construction, or specialty building — standard residential or commercial carpentry alone is not sufficient
▸ Demonstrated ability to execute complex, one-off builds from drawings or creative direction with minimal supervision
▸ Strong understanding of shop tools, joinery techniques, material properties, and finishing methods across multiple material types
▸ Ability to read and interpret design drawings, construction documents, and creative briefs
▸ Self-motivated, highly adaptable, and able to manage time and priorities effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
▸ Comfortable working both independently and as part of a small, highly collaborative creative team
▸ Fluent in both written and verbal English
▸ Strong critical thinking skills — able to identify build challenges early and devise practical, high-quality solutions
Preferred Experience
Candidates with backgrounds in the following areas will be given strong preference:
▸ Film, or commercial set construction — experience building for camera, working to art director specs, and delivering under strict production schedules
▸ Experiential marketing build houses — experience constructing brand activations, immersive pop-ups, touring installations, or large-scale consumer events
▸ Tradeshow, event, or retail display fabrication — particularly custom or non-standard structures beyond modular systems
▸ CNC routing, laser cutting, or other digital fabrication tools
▸ Experience with unconventional or artistic builds — sculptural elements, large-format graphics integration, mixed-media installations
▸ Ability to contribute creatively to design conversations and offer build-informed feedback during the concept phase
