Board of Director, Treasurer – Volunteer Position (minimum 2-yr term)

The Opportunity: Youth Rising Above is seeking a Board Director with strong financial expertise to serve as Treasurer and provide financial leadership and oversight to the organization. This is an opportunity for an experienced finance professional who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth and wants to apply their expertise at the governance level of a growing nonprofit organization. The Treasurer will play an important role in helping YRA strengthen its financial sustainability, accountability, internal controls, and long-term financial planning. Working closely with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and other Board members, the Treasurer will help ensure that YRA’s financial resources are managed responsibly and aligned with its mission and strategic priorities.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in financial management, accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, audit/review processes, financial controls, risk management, or nonprofit/charity finance.
Experience in fund development, fundraising, human resources, governance, or nonprofit leadership is also highly valued.
Anticipated Start Date: October 2026
Hours: 5-7 hours per month, 2 year term plus extensions to a maximum of 4 years

Role Description: As Treasurer and a voting member of the Board of Directors, you will:
- Provide financial leadership and advice to the Board and Executive Director.
- Help the Board understand YRA’s financial position, financial risks, and opportunities.
- Review and present financial statements and financial reports to the Board.
- Support the development, review, and monitoring of the organization’s annual budget.
- Monitor cash flow, financial performance, and the organization’s overall financial sustainability.
- Provide oversight of financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and risk management.
- Help ensure appropriate stewardship and prudent management of YRA’s assets.
- Support the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and legal obligations.
- Work with the Executive Director and relevant staff/volunteers to strengthen financial processes and accountability.
- Support preparation for year-end financial reporting, external review/audit, and applicable regulatory or charitable reporting requirements.
- Identify financial risks and bring significant issues or recommendations to the attention of the Board.
- Help the Board assess the financial implications of strategic initiatives, programs, funding opportunities, and organizational decisions.
- Support the development of longer-term financial plans and strategies to strengthen YRA’s financial sustainability.
- Help establish appropriate financial metrics and reporting for the Board.
- Ensure the Board has timely, accurate, and meaningful financial information to support informed decision-making.
- Participate as an active member of the Board and contribute to the organization’s overall strategic direction.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Attend 2-hour monthly board meetings nine times annually, while fulfilling a minimum 1 year term.
- Participate fully in at least 1 Board sub-committee.
- Review financial statements, Board materials, and other pre-reading in advance of meetings.
- Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making.
- Exercise independent judgment and constructively challenge ideas when appropriate.
- Help ensure that YRA operates in accordance with its governing documents, applicable laws, and regulatory requirements.
- Support the recruitment, development, and engagement of Board members.
- Act as an ambassador and advocate for YRA within the community.
- Support fundraising and resource development efforts through personal networks, introductions, relationships, and strategic advice.
- Help identify potential funding, partnership, and resource development opportunities.
- Respect confidentiality and maintain appropriate boundaries between Board governance and staff operations.
- Participate in Board learning and development opportunities.
- Make a reasonable effort to respond to YRA communications and matters requiring Board input.
- Contribute positively and respectfully to a diverse Board environment that values different perspectives, experiences, and voices.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chairperson.
Qualifications
- Required - demonstrated or proven experience in either: fund development, governance, human resources, strategic planning, financial management, legal management, policy development/evaluation or management of social services
- Preferred – minimum 2 years experience serving as a Board member of a registered charity
- 2 year term commitment, and the ability to attend monthly board and sub-committee meetings
- A strong intrinsic desire to serve youth at-risk who are marginalized by poverty through a start-up non-profit organization capacity
- Experience with providing leadership/guidance at a strategic level
- Excellent strategic and analytical thinking skills
- Demonstrated success building, cultivating, and stewarding new relationships.
Strong assets:
- Previous experience serving on a nonprofit or charitable Board.
- Experience as a Treasurer or member of a Finance/Audit Committee.
- Experience working with registered charities or nonprofit organizations.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting, charitable reporting, or financial compliance.
- Experience with fundraising, fund development, grants, or donor stewardship.
- Experience with organizational risk management.
- Experience in human resources, governance, or strategic planning.
- Professional accounting or finance designation (CPA, CFA, etc.) or equivalent professional experience.
