SUMMARY
Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is a unique and high profile tourist attraction. We provide customer-service-focused education that promotes the appreciation of butterflies and other invertebrates and highlights the important role these animals play in our ecosystem. This role works to provide a positive and memorable experience for all visitors and is the first point of contact when visitors arrive and the incumbent will interact with guests in the conservatory, galleries, and gift store providing them with a memorable experience. The Nature Interpreter & Guest Services will work closely with the Gift Store & Guest Services Manager and Naturalist & Conservatory Manager and will assist with a diverse assortment of duties that reflect the immediate needs of the organization. Typical daily responsibilities of the Nature Interpreter & Guest Services include assisting guests, processing transactions, and engaging guests. In addition, the incumbent will support operations in other departments such as the Café as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Nature Interpretation & Conservatory
- Greet, welcome, and assist visitors in their discovery of the tropical Conservatory
- Engage guests by providing interesting/unique facts, identifying butterflies, insects, plants and birds, answering visitor questions, and handling live insects and arthropods
- Interact with and provide educational and interpretive programming and services to visitors with information relating to insects, environment, conservation
- Follow the Conservatory’s CFIA protocols and assist with receiving & processing of pupae shipments
- Ensure pathways in conservatory are tidy and free from slip & trip hazards including plant material
Guest Services
Gift Store & Admissions
- Greet visitors in friendly and enthusiastic manner and advise them of the facility layout, discuss featured exhibits, special events, tours and Café specials
- Provide information to visitors and answer phone inquiries
- Process admission ticket sales using the online timed ticketing platform and operate the point of sale system for tickets, memberships, purchases and returns
- Problem solve and manage customer comments
Café
- Welcome and greet guests to the onsite Café, receive customer orders for food and beverages, operate till and process point of sale transactions
- Prepare & cook food, safely operate kitchen equipment, and maintain stock preparation in order to maintain a high level of food quality and customer satisfaction
- Maintain a tidy and clean Café front-of-house, dining area, and patio with table service, bussing tables, dishwashing, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, removing garbage to comply with government Food Safety and Health & Safety standards
Guest Services Resource
- Keep windows, surfaces, exhibits, visitor washrooms, and signage clean in work and display areas
- Provide coverage for lunches and breaks in the Gift Store, Admissions Counter, Conservatory, and Café
Additional Duties
- Other duties to support daily operations and customer service as assigned
- Assist other departments as needed
- Adhere to all Company policies, rules, systems and procedures which are outlined in the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory Employee Handbook, as well as all Health and Safety policies and procedures and safe work practices
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS, & SKILLS
- Strong customer service skills and excellent communication skills
- High level of organization and attention to detail, responsible and enthusiastic attitude
- Comfortable initiating engagement and interacting with visitors of different ages and abilities, in large and small groups in a positive and enthusiastic manner
- An interest in or pursuing post-secondary education in ecology, conservation, customer service, tourism, hospitality and service, or related field an asset
- Background in nature study, interpretation and education are an asset
- Interest in insects, invertebrates and plants an asset
- Cash Handling practices an asset
- Safe Food handling practices an asset
- Current Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
UNIFORM
Staff are required to wear the appropriate uniform, footwear and safety equipment at all times as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Guest Services Uniform
- An embroidered uniform shirt and name tag (both are provided free of charge by the employer, but are subject to a fee if they are not returned at the end of employment)
- Black pants or shorts and neutral closed-toed footwear (employees must provide these at their own cost)
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
This position is for a fixed-term, with potential for either part-time, or casual hours. The shifts are typically from 9 am to 5 pm. The rate of pay is $18.00/hour.
