The Trail Maintenance Crew will support the Carpenter Center by ensuring that all trails remain safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable for the children, youth, and community groups who use our property. Crew members will contribute to the day-to-day upkeep of existing trails while also assisting in the planning, development, and construction of new trail routes and outdoor recreation spaces. Through hands-on projects, participants will gain practical experience in site preparation, trail construction, basic carpentry, environmental stewardship, and the use of digital tools for mapping, documentation, and project tracking.
Core Responsibilities
- Support the daily maintenance and improvement of the Carpenter Center's trail system.
- Assist with the planning, clearing, and development of new trail routes and outdoor recreation areas.
- Complete small construction and repair projects, including steps, boardwalks, drainage features, trail signage, and other trail infrastructure.
- Clear debris, manage vegetation, and identify potential safety hazards along trail routes.
- Support erosion control and habitat protection efforts to maintain healthy natural spaces.
- Use basic digital tools, including mapping applications, photo documentation, and digital checklists, to support trail assessments and project tracking.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment and follow all Carpenter Center safety procedures.
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to complete assigned projects and tasks.
- Communicate trail issues, project progress, and supply needs to the Facilities/Property Manager.
- Participate in training related to tool safety, construction techniques, environmental protection, and outdoor work practices.
- Contribute to end-of-season reporting by documenting completed projects, new trail development, and recommendations for future improvements.
- Support other outdoor and site-related projects as requested by Carpenter Center leadership.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in environmental studies, forestry, outdoor recreation, construction, landscaping, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Experience in trail maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, construction, or outdoor labour is preferred.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and performing physically demanding work.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and environmental stewardship.
- Experience using digital tools such as mobile devices, mapping applications, or project tracking software is an asset.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification is required
- and a valid driver's license are considered assets.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
