Job Summary:
The Counterperson will support the daily operations of Heart Niagara’s social enterprise café by providing exceptional customer service, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, and assisting with food and beverage preparation. This role plays an important part in creating a positive experience for guests while promoting Heart Niagara’s mission of healthy living and community engagement. The ideal candidate is friendly, reliable, and eager to learn about food service operations in a fast-paced, community-focused setting.
This position requires some flexibility in hours and availability, as it will include morning, daytime, evening, and weekend hours to meet program demands. This position will be completed 100% in-person.
Responsibilities:
o Greet customers warmly, take orders accurately, and provide knowledgeable information regarding menu items.
o Prepare and serve beverages and light food items following food safety and quality standards.
o Operate the point-of-sale system, process transactions, and handle cash or card payments responsibly.
o Maintain cleanliness and organization of the service counter, seating area, and café equipment.
o Restock supplies, monitor inventory levels, and notify supervisors when items need replenishing.
o Support café promotions and community engagement activities that align with Heart Niagara’s mission.
o Follow all food handling, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures.
o Perform additional tasks as need to ensure smooth café operations.
Performance requirements:
o Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with a friendly and professional demeanor.
o Ability to multitask, stay organized, and work efficiently in a busy environment.
o Willingness to learn food preparation procedures and adhere to food safety standards.
o Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
o Attention to detail when preparing orders, handling payments, and maintaining cleanliness.
Qualifications
o Candidates will have between 0 – 2 years of experience in food services.
o Candidates should have a solid understanding of health education and promotion
o Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
o Have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle (some workdays will be scheduled at secondary sites)
o Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
o Current CPR/AED certification (successful candidates will be recertified by Heart Niagara)
