Licensed Pharmacist – Pharmacy Services & Daily OperationsRole Summary
The Licensed Pharmacist will play a key role in managing day-to-day pharmacy functions while ensuring patients receive safe, accurate, and professional care. This position combines clinical practice, prescription assessment and dispensing, patient counselling, communication with healthcare providers, and operational oversight. All duties must be performed in accordance with applicable legislation, professional standards, ethical obligations, and pharmacy policies.
Main ResponsibilitiesClinical Services & Patient Support
- Advise patients and healthcare professionals on prescription medications, over-the-counter products, and therapeutic options.
- Provide clear and reliable medication counselling, including instructions for use, dosage, precautions, possible interactions, and side effects.
- Work within the pharmacist’s authorized scope of practice under Alberta legislation and personal professional competency.
- Assess, verify, and dispense prescriptions accurately and safely.
- Protect patient confidentiality, privacy, and informed consent in all interactions.
- Remain available and approachable to patients within the pharmacy setting.
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to support improved patient care.
- Keep accurate, complete, and compliant patient records, including required documentation for controlled substances.
- Participate in health promotion activities and pharmacy-based clinical services in the community.
- Address patient concerns and respond to requests from external healthcare providers in a timely and professional manner.
Dispensary Management & Prescription Workflow
- Control dispensary access to protect medications, inventory, records, and patient information.
- Monitor prescription queues and coordinate workflow to support timely and efficient service.
- Review will-call prescriptions regularly in accordance with established procedures.
- Identify expired, damaged, inappropriate, or unsuitable stock and ensure proper removal and documentation.
- Manage medication ordering and maintain appropriate stock levels through wholesalers and suppliers.
- Follow all requirements under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, including documentation and reporting duties.
- Ensure medications are stored, prepared, handled, and distributed properly, including products requiring additional training such as vaccines and biologics.
Pharmacy Environment, Team Support & Business Operations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional environment in the dispensary, counselling areas, and patient waiting spaces.
- Ensure inventory is arranged, stored, and presented appropriately.
- Communicate pending issues, concerns, or incomplete tasks clearly during shift changes.
- Support staff compliance with professional conduct, appearance, and dress code expectations.
- Participate in financial awareness, operational tracking, and reporting activities when required.
- Recognize and support opportunities for pharmacy service growth and business development.
- Review internal updates, communications, and operational notices, and take appropriate action.
- Record and report medication incidents, safety concerns, privacy matters, and near-miss events.
- Encourage teamwork and contribute to staff learning, coaching, and ongoing development.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Active pharmacist licence to practise in Alberta.
- Strong clinical decision-making skills and sound professional judgment.
- Ability to work independently while supporting and guiding pharmacy team members.
- Leadership ability, including coaching, mentoring, and problem-solving with colleagues.
- Capacity to manage changing priorities in a busy pharmacy environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Professional, patient-centred approach to service delivery.
- Strong analytical thinking and practical problem-solving ability.
- Competence with pharmacy management software and general computer systems.
- Commitment to health and safety, regulatory compliance, and workplace standards.
- Completion of mandatory training and ongoing participation in continuing education.
