Metallurgical Technologist — Quality Assurance, L'Orignal, ON
A well-established North American producer of wire rod and steel billet, located in L'Orignal, Ontario (midway between Ottawa and Montreal) and part of a major U.S.-based industrial group, is hiring a Metallurgical Technologist for its Quality Assurance team. Reporting to the Quality Manager, you'll be the technical decision-maker on what ships and what stays on hold — a high-visibility role at an EAF-based mill serving cold heading, high carbon, and welding markets.
Key responsibilities:
- Own daily release/hold decisions on wire rod against tensile, chemical, metallographic, and special test results, including reclassifying heats that miss spec.
- Personally execute metallographic sample preparation (cut, mount, grind, polish, etch), optical microscopy, image analysis, hardness testing, and billet macro-etch; log all results in the QA database.
- Sequence daily workflow across the Met Lab, Rod Inspection, Chemistry Lab, retrims, ISR, and Shipping to keep releases on time.
- Investigate mixed-steel incidents and customer complaints end-to-end — detection, traceback, root cause, and documented corrective action — alongside QA Engineers and the Metallurgical Supervisor.
- Maintain and reconcile computerized coil inventory across the yard, external processors, and consigned stock; manage damaged coils, re-tags, downgrades, and customer returns.
- Review Level 2 melt shop quality reports and keep lab equipment calibrated and audit-ready.
What you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering / Materials Science, OR a 3-year Metallurgical Technologist diploma.
- Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on metallurgical experience in steel production (rod mill, bar mill, long products), foundry, or comparable heavy industrial QA lab.
- Demonstrated authority to release or hold material against customer/internal specifications — not shadowing.
- Hands-on proficiency in metallographic sample prep, microscopy, hardness testing (Rockwell/Vickers/Brinell), and box furnace work.
- Working knowledge of a rod or bar mill process (billet reheat, rolling, cooling bed, coiling, retrims).
- Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP), Word, and Access or an equivalent relational QA database.
- Fluent English (C1+). Functional French (B2+) is a strong asset given the local labour catchment.
- Clean criminal background check; able to work fully onsite in industrial plant conditions wearing full PPE.
Compensation and format:
Base salary band is set by the USW collective agreement: CAD $66,083 – $75,629 annually, with placement based on credentials and relevant experience. Full benefits package: medical/vision/dental, life and LTD insurance, EAP with telemedicine, RRSP with employer contribution, free on-site parking, and PPE provided.
