PAID ACTING GIG — FOUR MAJOR COMEDY ROLES
Boreas Theatre is urgently seeking four funny, fearless male performers for a paid, non-equity immersive comedy production in Picton, Ontario.
This is not a traditional sit-down-and-watch play. The audience attends an outrageously chaotic wedding as invited guests, surrounded by feuding relatives, questionable decisions, live music, dancing and family drama unfolding in real time.
The production is highly interactive and largely improvisational. We are looking for performers who can build bold, larger-than-life characters, think on their feet and stay completely committed while interacting directly with an audience.
ROLES WE ARE SEEKING
THE GROOM
Playing age: Mid-20s to mid-30s
Charming, rowdy and genuinely likeable, the groom is everybody’s favourite guy. He grew up helping out in his father’s spectacularly tacky nightclub and learned early how to keep a lid on family chaos.
He loves his bride and desperately wants the wedding to go well, but he is trapped between two explosive families, an unpredictable father and the sudden arrival of his bride’s ex-boyfriend. This is a major role for a charismatic performer who can be funny, grounded and emotionally believable while trying to hold the entire disaster together.
THE EX-BOYFRIEND
Playing age: Mid-20s to late 30s
Fresh out of rehab and very much not over the bride, her former boyfriend arrives at the wedding convinced that she still belongs with him.
He is a long-haired, heavy-metal-loving burnout who is wounded, reckless, strangely confident and increasingly chaotic as the reception unfolds. He is both ridiculous and a genuine threat to the groom’s perfect day.
This is an excellent role for a fearless physical comedian who can create a memorable entrance, commit fully to outrageous behaviour and still find the vulnerable person underneath the swagger.
THE CATERER, MC AND SELF-PROCLAIMED COMEDY LEGEND
Playing age: Approximately 40s to 60s
A flashy caterer, reception-hall impresario and fourth-rate nightclub comic who believes he should be hosting the Academy Awards.
Covered in confidence and probably too much gold jewellery, he runs the wedding like a king holding court. He introduces the bridal party, commands the room, leads ridiculous wedding traditions, promotes his food as though it were fine art and eventually unleashes his own painfully cheesy stand-up act on the guests.
This is a big, joyful showman role for someone who loves working a crowd, owning a microphone and playing a man who has never once questioned whether he is the most entertaining person in the room.
THE FATHER OF THE GROOM
Playing age: Approximately 50s to 70s
The charismatic and deeply questionable owner of a nightclub called the Animal Kingdom. He is an old-school operator who sees himself as the king of a small but mighty empire—and expects everyone around him to recognize his authority.
He arrives with his much-younger girlfriend, his own bottle and absolutely no intention of behaving himself. Beneath the swagger, he is watching his son grow up, get married and potentially move beyond his control.
This is a fantastic character role for an actor who can combine charm, sleaze, danger, comedy and flashes of real vulnerability. He should enter a room as though he owns the building, even when he absolutely does not.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
This immersive comedy places the actors directly among the audience throughout the ceremony and reception. Performers must be comfortable improvising, interacting with guests and remaining in character for the full event.
Formal theatre training is not required. All experience levels are welcome. Strong improv instincts, comic timing, confidence and a willingness to make bold character choices matter far more than an extensive résumé.
This is a paid, non-equity production. Applicants must be 18 or older due to mature themes.
REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCE DATES
Rehearsals take place on Sundays and Thursday evenings from now until opening.
