Job Summary
The Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring materials, components, and services required for production and operations. This role plays a critical part in maintaining cost efficiency, ensuring supply continuity, and supporting cross-functional teams including engineering, production, and project management. The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and skilled in building strong supplier relationships to optimize quality, pricing, and delivery performance.
Key Responsibilities
Procurement & Sourcing
- Source and procure raw materials, mechanical components, hydraulic/electrical parts, subcontracted services, and specialty items based on project and production requirements.
- Evaluate supplier quotations and negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules to ensure cost-effective purchasing.
- Identify and qualify new suppliers to strengthen supply chain resilience and support new product or project needs.
Supplier Management
- Maintain strong relationships with suppliers, ensuring reliable delivery performance and adherence to quality standards.
- Monitor vendor performance, address issues, and implement corrective actions when needed.
- Participate in supplier reviews and contribute to supplier development initiatives.
Operational Support
- Issue and manage purchase orders, verifying accuracy of specifications, pricing, and delivery timelines.
- Collaborate with internal departments to clarify technical requirements, resolve discrepancies, and expedite critical deliveries.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with production planning to prevent shortages or delays.
- Track shipments, follow up on late or incomplete orders, and maintain accurate procurement records.
Cost, Quality & Compliance
- Support cost-reduction and value-engineering initiatives through strategic sourcing, volume consolidation, and competitive bidding.
- Ensure purchased materials comply with engineering specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements.
- Assist with audits and maintain documentation necessary for ISO and internal compliance processes.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- 2–5+ years of purchasing experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment (capital equipment/heavy machinery experience is an asset).
- Strong negotiation skills and experience managing supplier relationships.
- Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical components preferred.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
