(DEI) is a professional mechanical and electrical consulting engineering firm providing services to architects and building owners in the building service industry since 1999. With a comprehensive list of completed projects ranging from residential, education, institutional, recreational, and commercial, DEI has the experience to provide full-service mechanical and electrical consulting for any development, building, or client.
Role Overview
DEI’s goal is to hire a confident electrical designer with four plus years of experience completing electrical design in the building service industry.
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Develop, with oversight from a Senior Electrical Engineer as required, the technical design for various electrical systems from preliminary design phases through to completion and would including coordinating electrical site services for new construction, site photometric plans, electrical distribution design, fire alarm, generator (standby and life safety) designs, emergency and life safety systems, lighting & associated controls, and other electrical requirements to suit client standards and building classifications.
- Assist a Senior Electrical Engineer to effectively resolve construction issues, manage client expectations, review construction sites, liaise with contractors, and other contract administration requirements.
- Performing design calculations for each of these systems, attending design meetings to represent the electrical discipline, selecting relevant equipment, management of other junior electrical team members, overseeing / completing the drafting and modeling assigned projects, coordination of electrical systems with mechanical, architectural, and other disciplines, and contract administration requirements.
- Be responsible for drafting (AutoCAD) or modeling (Revit) electrical systems for projects with minimum instructions from Senior Electrical Engineer.
- Be responsible for design document updates and reissuance of drawings and sketches to assist Senior and Intermediate staff for issuing site instructions, change notices and addenda throughout the construction portion of a project.
Projects may include working on residential (low and high-rise), educational projects (public and private schools, post-secondary institutions), commercial projects (box stores, base buildings, etc.), institutional projects (public sector facilities), industrial facilities, retirement / long term care facilities, and a variety of other projects. This is an in-office position.
Qualifications
This position is intended for an individual that has graduated from an accredited engineering program and is eligible for pursing or has obtained a P.Eng. or LEL designation with Professional Engineers Ontario or has obtained an OACETT certification (C.E.T., C.Tech.). Position requires prior experience at an engineering consulting firm with a similar portfolio of projects. All candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively in a team environment. Specifically, the ideal candidate would be able to think critically and analytically with problem solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to supervise junior staff based on team structure. Further qualifications for this role include:
- Prior electrical engineering experience in the building service industry.
- Strong technical knowledge in the design and code requirements for power and distribution, lighting, lighting controls, fire alarm, life safety systems, generators, and other auxiliary systems such as IT, A/V, and communications.
- Excellent computer skills and use of software such as the Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, One Note).
- Knowledge of relevant Canadian and Ontario codes and standards (OBC, OESC, IES, NFPA, IES, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize AutoCAD to prepare electrical design documents.
- Working knowledge and experience using Revit is considered an asset.
- Strong ability with lighting design software such as AGI32, fixture selection and selecting of .ies files, understanding of light fixture characteristics, and industry lighting approaches
- Ability to supervise and provide instructions and markups to junior staff is considered an asset.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to think analytically, attention to detail, resourceful and detail-oriented, and team and customer service focused.
