Engineering Manager
About OSCP
OSCP builds high-performance inertial navigation systems and photonic gyroscopes for navigation where GPS does not work. Our customers are in defense, aerospace and maritime. We are a small, fast-moving team in Montréal, scaling our product and engineering group.
The role
We are growing Product and Engineering into two teams, Design and QA, and we need an experienced Engineering Manager to run the people and delivery side so our technical leadership can stay focused on product and the hard technical work. You will own how the team operates day to day: hiring, performance, project timelines, delivery and supply chain support. You will manage all the engineers across both teams and report to the VP, Product. The team is 7 today and planned to double within 12 months, and you will lead that growth.
This is a people and delivery role, not a technical-direction role. Product strategy and the hard technical calls stay with the VP, Product. We hire for management skill, not industry pedigree. Your background can be anything, as long as you can lead engineers and ship. Just as important as the resume: you are excellent with people, you run the meetings and conversations that move things forward, and you understand a culture before you try to change it. And like everyone here, you roll up your sleeves. We are a startup, so you pitch in on whatever needs doing when the team needs it, whatever your title says.
What you will own
- People. Run 1-1s, reviews, coaching and growth for every engineer across the Design and QA teams.
- Hiring Own staffing, recruiting, interviewing, onboarding and performance management, including letting people go when needed.
- Delivery. Own multiple project timelines, plan the work, clear blockers and keep deliveries on schedule.
- Supply chain. Help build the supply chain, then support and run it day to day for components and builds. Component changes always get a technical assessment with the VP, Product.
- Cadence and coordination. Set and run the team's meeting rhythm, stand-ups, planning and 1-1s, and keep the Design and QA teams aligned and supporting each other.
- Reporting. Give leadership a clear, honest read on status, risks and timelines.
What we are looking for
- Proven experience managing a multi-person engineering team.
- A track record of shipping on time, ideally hardware or embedded products.
- Strong hiring and team-building experience.
- Excellent at running meetings and conversations. You keep discussions focused, draw people out, surface the real issues, and turn talk into clear decisions and next steps.
- Learns the culture before changing it. You first understand how the team works, what our culture gives us and the headaches it causes. Then you shape it the right way, by example and through who you hire, not by imposing a playbook on arrival.
- Comfort owning delivery and operations, including supporting the supply chain.
- Highly organized, and does well in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- Sleeves-up in a startup. When the team needs it, you help with whatever needs doing, beyond your job description.
- Background-agnostic. You do not need a navigation, photonics or hardware background, though exposure helps.
- Eligible to work in Canada and to access export-controlled technical data (we build defense products).
Nice to have
- Hardware, electronics or deep-tech experience.
- Experience in defense, aerospace or another regulated environment.
- Bilingual, French and English.
What success looks like
- First 90 days. You have integrated with the team and earned its trust, you understand how we work and where the friction is, you know the projects and the delivery risks, and you have taken day-to-day people and schedule management off the VP, Product.
- First year. The team has grown from 7 toward 14 with hiring on track, deliveries are predictable, the supply chain is solid, the engineers are well-supported and growing, and you are strengthening the culture by example and through who you bring in.
