VPC Salary Range: $45,000 to $55,000 per annum

The Vancouver Prostate Centre (VPC) houses a large, multidisciplinary research program conducting basic, clinical, and translational research. VPC is one of six specialized research centres within the M.H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences, a National Centre of Excellence and a designated Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research.
VPC is affiliated with the University of British Columbia (Department of Urologic Sciences) and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Additional information about VPC and its research programs can be found at www.prostatecentre.com.
Position OverviewThe Vancouver Prostate Centre has an opportunity for a permanent, full-time Lab Services Technician within its Lab Services Department. This role offers the opportunity to work with highly motivated colleagues in a science-oriented, collaborative, and dynamic research environment.
The successful candidate will work closely with another Lab Services Technician as part of a cohesive team and will report to the Lab Manager. Training will be provided through oral instruction, established procedures, and written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). While the position provides exposure to a working research centre, it does not involve direct participation in scientific experiments.
Key Responsibilities
- Collecting, washing, and maintaining laboratory glassware
- Preparing items for sterilization and autoclaving
- Preparing laboratory buffers and solutions
- Managing inventory of laboratory consumables and ensuring timely ordering and restocking
- Assisting in the creation, review, and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Assisting with laboratory health and safety initiatives
- Training personnel on the proper use of specific equipment and safety procedures (e.g., autoclaves and water purification systems)
- Performing other related duties as assigned
Decision Making/Level of Accountability/Extent of Authority
Once trained, the incumbent is expected to work independently and demonstrate adaptability in managing task priorities. Responsibilities include ordering consumables, monitoring supply levels, and identifying alternative products when necessary.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Lab Manager and follows established procedures and standards. Performs routine tasks independently and liaises with other departments, laboratories, and external service personnel as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Familiarity with laboratory environments and health and safety requirements is an asset
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including repetitive tasks and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Reliability and strong attention to detail
- Ability to follow instructions carefully and accurately document and maintain records
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to interact professionally with laboratory personnel and external service technicians
- A cell phone is required for work-related communication
