What We Do
Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.
The Community Health Bus provides team-based primary health care, mental health care, and integrated social supports for youth and adults experiencing barriers to accessing traditional services, including primary care assessment, chronic disease support, and connection to basic needs and community resources.
Reporting to the Program Manager, the Mobile Registered Nurse (NP) has a passion for patient-centred care and working with individuals with complex mental health and psychosocial needs. Working in cooperation with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Diabetes Educator, Mental Health Clinicians, and the Mobile Resource Specialist, the mobile nurse fills a vital role within the mobile clinic flow structure, including initial triage, patient assessment, treatment, case management, and care coordination. This role involves working with youth and adult populations primarily doing outreach on a mobile medical bus. This will include providing sexual and reproductive health care (including nurse-initiated STBBI testing), laboratory procedures, mental health care, chronic disease management, and seeing a variety of episodic care presentations. Additionally, the mobile nurse work on the Diabetes Mobile Clinic, in partnership with the University of Calgary providing diabetes care to underserved individuals.
This is a part-time, contract position until September 4, 2026. (8:30am - 4:30pm, Wednesday to Friday)
Then, this role will transition into a full-time, contract position from September 8, 2026 to November 2027. (8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday)
What You Will Do

Provide culturally sensitive nursing services that are responsive and adaptable in meeting the needs of a vulnerable population.

Perform appropriate assessments, treatments, education, referral, urgent response, and triage activities.
-
Advocate for the unique needs of clients to a variety of community partners.
-
Document outreach encounters accurately and use data to inform clinical decisions, service planning, and advocacy for individual and population health improvements.

Work collaboratively and in consultation with other Alex Team Members, community agencies, and referral sources.
-
Participate in health education, health promotion, and outreach activities.
-
Provide inclusive and confidential care related to contraception, STI prevention and testing/treatment, and healthy relationships.

Mental health screening, support, safety planning, and referrals.
-
Engage in evaluation and quality improvement activities as directed by The Alex.

Perform laboratory procedures including phlebotomy and prepare specimens for transport

Provide assessment, education, and support for clients managing chronic conditions.

Use Point-of-Care Testing tools such as HbA1C, blood glucose testing, pregnancy testing, urinalysis, tonometry, and imaging with a retinal camera (training will be provided).

Schedule appointments for patients with internal and external providers for clinical tests, procedures, consultations, and follow-up as directed.

Assist with data collection and entry as directed.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
-
Graduate from an accredited degree program in nursing.
-
Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
-
Ideally a minimum of two (2) years Nursing experience. Experience in areas such as mental health, primary care, and/or sexual and reproductive care would be an asset. Preference would be given to those with experience working with clients with psychosocial complexity.

Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team model and innovative outreach service delivery model.
-
Ability to work independently and to full scope of practice to support clients in the community.
-
Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention is beneficial.
-
Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset.
-
Advanced foot care course and experience in diabetes care are assets.
-
Ability to be flexible and multi-task in fast-paced environment.
-
Knowledge of Health Information Act (HIA).
-
Excellent assessment, documentation, organization, communication, and rapport-building skills.
-
Class 5 driver’s license, personal vehicle for business use, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract are required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
-
A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.

Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.
Work Environment and Hours:

Predominantly outreach with some in-office components (Alex Mobile Headquarters: 4539 6th Street NE, Calgary).

0.6 FTE (22.5 hrs/week) and then 1.0 FTE (37.5 hrs/week)

Standard Hours: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Wednesday to Friday and then 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday; some scheduling flexibility may be available and required.

Continuous extended periods of sitting, with some standing and walking.

Occasional physical action requiring the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20 lbs.) throughout shift.

Occasional time outside in all weather conditions.

Occasional driving as part of work duties.
Driving on behalf of The Alex:
This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes. Candidates must show proof of a class 5 driver's license, a personal vehicle, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract. Mileage will be reimbursed in alignment with the CRA guidelines.
