The Role:
As a Casual Shelter Support Worker, you’ll work closely with residents to support their journey. Whether it’s creating safety plans, offering support, or connecting them with key community resources, your work will be vital in helping others feel seen, heard, and safe.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Support Residents: Provide non-judgmental, trauma-informed care and emotional support. Help residents set goals and navigate available resources.
- Crisis Response: Answer calls and offer crisis intervention.
- Intake & Discharge: Welcome new residents, conduct assessments, and ensure a smooth, supportive transition when they move on.
- Documentation & Admin: Maintain clear and accurate case notes and reports using software.
- Secure Space: Help maintain a clean, safe, and supportive living space.
- Advocate & Empower: Accompany residents to appointments, case planning goals.
- Stay Sharp: Keep up-to-date on social issues that impact those affected by homelessness, substance use and other social issues, attend training, and grow alongside the Cedar Strong team.
What You Bring:
- Diploma in a related human/social services field
- At least 1 year of related experience (paid or volunteer)
- Training in Trauma-Informed Practice, De-escalation training, CPR/First Aid
- Ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- A commitment to ethical, inclusive, and non-judgmental support
Other Requirements:
- A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle with business insurance
- Comfortable with some physical work (donation sorting, cleaning, etc.)
- Emotionally resilient, flexible, and grounded in professional boundaries
