An opportunity has come up for someone with passion and experience in Aquaculture to join our team at our Tentburn Hatchery, in Southbridge, Canterbury as a Hatchery Technician. This is a permanent, full-time position, working 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. You will rotate between Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday to Thursday, 8.00am - 4.30pm. However, flexibility is expected in order to work with the whole team. As part of this integral role, you will be responsible for the hatchery and rearing of our King Salmon, working with all life stages from egg to smolt.
Coordinating the daily operations from the incubation room, first feeding facility and through to the raceways, this role involves all aspects of fish husbandry including feeding, rearing, and maintaining optimal water conditions for our salmon eggs to smolt. Monitoring and maintaining fish health through regular observation, disease prevention and appropriate treatment methods, implementing incubation protocols and ensuring effective hatchery practices alongside biosecurity standards.
In your previous experience with aquaculture, you will employ best practices to collect and analyse data to ensure high standards of fish welfare and production strategy efficiency.
It goes without saying you will be an experienced and passionate Aquaculture professional, so this role comes with a few prerequisites to be successful.
To be successful in this role, you will need the following:
- 2+ years’ experience in Aquaculture, specifically in fin fish farming with expertise in incubation and rearing of early salmon life stages
- Experience in fin fish handling, egg receival, incubation processes, grading, production strategies, and adherence to strict biosecurity standards
- Knowledge and experience with disinfection protocols, feed and growth calculations and projects, disease identification and treatment
- A tertiary qualification or relevant aquaculture qualification would be preferred but not essential
- A strong focus on health and safety
- Ability to work well in a small team and alone
- Clear communication & problem-solving skills
The salary range for this position is 44,529.50 (CAD) – 56,675.00 (CAD) per year $55,000 (NZD to $70,000 NZD), and you will also get Southern Cross Medical Insurance.
