The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager, Indigenous Health. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose for the Research Manager, Indigenous Health is to provide research management support to the Principal Investigator and the research team. This involves supporting a fast-paced national and international program of research with many collaborating partners including partner institutions and Indigenous communities. The Research Manager plays a key role in liaising with national partners to complete research agreements, manage financial processes, manage legal agreements, and engage with all research partners. These duties include tracking budgets and directing the day to day work of research program staff (5 direct reports) and the HR tasks associated with people management. The Research Manager will lead and direct research tasks, initiatives and track publications. This role is based in Calgary, Alberta and may require some national or international travel.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Coordination:
-
Responsible for effectively coordinating and organizing projects, events, and budgets with oversight from the Principal Investigator

Supports priorities of the team on a broad spectrum of projects and tasks including coordinating award applications, liaising with internal and external officials

Responsible for tracking project budgets

Responsible for preparing and executing contracts and MOUs with community partners

Responsible for HR tasks for research program, contract renewals, mentorship and annual reviews

Administration Activities:
-
Creates and distributes agendas and records minutes at project meetings

Maintains and orders office supplies necessary to conduct regular business
-
Connects with the partner networks, funders, and national and international collaborative partners as needed to provide reports and budget updates

Other duties as assigned

Leadership & People Management
-
Managing 5 direct reports including hiring, annual and regular performance reviews, grievances, discipline, learning and development, terminations and succession planning

Responsible for leading staff to execute their programs

Task delegation and modification to overcome restrictions to ensure research program goals and objectives are achieved
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Graduate degree in a health or related field
-
5 years experience in an academic research environment required with experience managing multiple projects, demands and deadlines. Exceptional organizational skills are necessary

Equivalent experience will be considered

Ability to anticipate needs, plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work with minimal direction and supervision
-
Superior interpersonal and communication skills required in dealing with a range of situations, which may include complex, sensitive and confidential issues. Develop and maintain a respectful and positive working relationship with UCalgary staff, students, and researchers

Excellent oral and written communication skills

In-depth knowledge of working within the University of Calgary and familiarity of operating procedures preferred

Ability to operate within a complex, multi-faceted work environment and be a strong team player

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with constantly and competing shifting priorities

Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook Mail and Calendar) and the university core business systems (e.g. PeopleSoft)

Experience with qualitative and quantitative data analysis software an asset

Ability to work independently, while supporting the Core Team priorities and to collaborate with others in setting goals and work effectively with teams to achieve agreed upon goals

Be resourceful, innovative, creative, and strategic in problem solving with a high attention to detail
