Ophthalmic Assistant/Medical Office Assistant
Position: Part-Time, 28-36 hours
Department: Ophthalmology
Reports To: Office Manager / Physician
We are a growing ophthalmology/retina office seeking a friendly, organized, and eager individual to join our team as a medical office assistant. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build a career in the ophthalmic field. You will play a vital role in providing an excellent experience for our patients while ensuring the smooth operation of the office. This position combines technical and administrative duties to ensure the smooth operation of our clinic while delivering dedicated patient care.
Position Overview: The successful individual will assist ophthalmologists in delivering high-quality patient care. The role requires performing diagnostic tests, assisting physicians in patient assessments, managing patient flow, and supporting administrative functions of the office. The ideal candidate should be organized, compassionate, and possess a strong attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greet and check in patients as they arrive, creating a welcoming atmosphere
- Manage scheduling, appointments, and patient communications with professionalism
- Answer phone calls, provide information, and address patient inquiries
- Verify patient information and ensure accurate documentation is maintained
- Assist with patient flow and maintain a clean, organized reception area
- Perform ophthalmic medical assistant duties, such as taking patient history, prepping patients for exams, and assisting with basic tests
- Prepare and clean exam rooms, ensuring they are properly equipped for patient visits
- Sterilize ophthalmic instruments and ensure proper maintenance.
- Ensure smooth transitions between front desk and clinical areas
- Support the office team with administrative and clinical tasks as required
- Assist in surgical administrative duties
- Respect and maintain patient confidentiality
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; further education or training in science and/or healthcare is a plus
- Previous experience in a healthcare or medical office environment is advantageous
- Experience or education in ophthalmology, retina care, or medical assisting is a plus
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented with excellent time management skills
- Proficiency with computer systems and medical software (Experience with Plexia not required but would be an asset)
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
- A positive, patient-focused attitude with a willingness to learn and grow in the ophthalmic field
