Position Summary:
The Road Repair Foreman is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and supervision of a wide range of road maintenance and construction activities within Wheatland County. This includes overseeing road repair and reclamation projects, culvert installation and replacement, in-house construction initiatives, small-scale road reconstruction projects, and bridge-sized culvert replacements. The Foreman ensures that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard, maintaining roadways in a safe and serviceable condition for the public.
The Road Repair Foreman is also responsible to perform road inspections and snowplowing duties during the winter season and to requires participation in an on-call rotational schedule to provide after-hours emergency response as needed. The Foreman will also provide back-up support within the Public Works Operations as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise the Road Repair and Reclamation Crews on a day-to-day basis.
- Identify, prioritize, plan, and implement projects to be carried out by the crews.
- Submit utility locates, organize third-party crossing agreements and utility moves, and ensure compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for hiring and training of new and seasonal employees.
- Operate various equipment and vehicles as required.
- Perform snowplowing, road inspections, and other various duties throughout the winter season, including rotational on-call weekend plowing.
- Participate in an on-call rotational schedule to provide after-hours emergency response as needed.
- Perform all daily safety and maintenance related requirements.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable Wheatland County policies and bylaws.
- Maintain own compliance with OH&S and ensure all applicable employees are in compliance with OH&S including employee attendance at regular safety tailgate meetings, employees being properly trained in OH&S related topics, and ensuring employees complete work in a safe manner.
- Appropriately, and in a timely manner complete administrative tasks, when required.
- Relate to and communicate with co-workers, management, ratepayers, and vendors sincerely, clearly, tactfully, promptly and courteously; respond to inquiries and complaints promptly and professionally.
- Perform tasks, consistent with the position, including special projects / assignments, as may be required on an ad hoc basis.
Qualifications:
- Valid Class 1 Alberta drivers’ licence
- 3 years’ experience in road construction, road maintenance, or public works operations
- 2 years’ supervisory or crew lead experience in a related field
- Experience operating a variety of heavy construction equipment such as graders, excavators, dozers, and scrapers
- Knowledge of road construction and culvert installation practices
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations and safe work practices
- Ability to communicate effectively with other team members, the public / County citizens, external agencies, etc.
Working Conditions:
- (Approximately) December – March (Winter Season) – Monday to Friday; 40 regular hours/week;
- (Approximately) April – November (Summer Season) – Monday to Friday; 44 regular hours/week;
- Overtime is required
- Rotational afterhours on-call is required
Pay: $97,198.00-$119,542.00 per year
Work Location: In person
