About the Opportunity
Aplin is pleased to be partnering with a long-standing and highly respected client to recruit a Litigation Associate to join its growing litigation and dispute resolution group in Edmonton.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated lawyer seeking exposure to sophisticated litigation matters while working alongside an experienced and collaborative team. The successful candidate will join a practice known for its strong client relationships, high-quality work, and collegial culture.
The firm is ideally seeking a lawyer with 4–6 years of litigation experience; however, applications from candidates with other levels of experience are welcome. The successful candidate will be matched with files and practice areas that align with their background and interests.
The litigation group advises a diverse client base across a broad range of industries and legal matters, offering exposure to complex disputes, strategic advisory work, and long-standing client relationships.
Areas of Practice
The firm is seeking a lawyer with experience in one or more areas of litigation, including commercial, construction, environmental, employment, regulatory, estate, Indigenous, franchise, or general civil disputes.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise clients on litigation strategy, risk management, and dispute resolution.
- Manage litigation files through all stages of the dispute process.
- Draft pleadings, applications, briefs, affidavits, and other litigation documents.
- Conduct legal research and prepare written advocacy materials.
- Participate in mediations, arbitrations, negotiations, and other dispute resolution processes.
- Work directly with clients to provide practical, strategic legal advice.
- Collaborate with partners and colleagues on complex litigation matters while maintaining responsibility for individual files where appropriate.
Practice Structure
The firm's litigation practice offers a blend of independent file management and collaborative teamwork.
- Associates have opportunities to manage their own files while receiving mentorship from experienced litigators.
- Larger and more complex matters are often staffed collaboratively.
- Team composition is tailored to the nature and complexity of each matter.
- Depending on experience and practice area, opportunities for direct client contact are available early in the role.
While advocacy experience is valued, the practice is primarily focused on strategic litigation and dispute resolution. Court appearances represent a relatively small portion of the overall practice, with the majority of time spent advising clients, preparing matters, and advancing disputes toward resolution.
Qualifications
- Member in good standing with a Canadian Law Society, preferably the Law Society of Alberta.
- Ideally, 4–6 years of litigation experience, although candidates with other levels of experience will be considered.
- Experience in one or more of the firm's core litigation practice areas.
- Strong analytical, research, drafting, and advocacy skills.
