We are seeking a Personal Support Worker/Health Care Aid for our family member with a developmental disability from 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday. This is a temporary position until the end of August 2026. The Personal Support worker will report directly to the family.
Duties include:
- Build a relationship with and get to know our family member by spending time with our family member
- Providing our family member with all personal care (toileting, dressing, showering, using a sling to get out of bed)
- Medication administration
- Assist our family member with tube feeding
- Assisting our family member to identify and participate in activities in the community, where they can connect with others around a common area of interest i.e. recreational clubs, volunteer interests, associations. This includes driving our family member to activities and actively assisting them to engage
- Facilitating our family member’s meaningful participation within community groups and assist in developing relationships within the community.
- Drive our family member to appointments, activities and volunteer and social interests
- Assisting our family member with job exploration, job search, providing on the job support, and developing relationships within the workplace
- Engage with our family member in the home
- Use coping strategies developed by the family
- Respond to unpredictable situations, if necessary, in a calm manner and problem solve with family/team members
- Support our family member by being present and answering questions respectfully by guiding and directing
- Safeguard the individual in the home and community when needed
- Light housekeeping duties
- Advocate: assist the individual to advocate on his/her own behalf, advocate on behalf of the person when necessary
Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of and commitment to inclusion
- Minimum of one-year personal care experience
- Experience with slings and tube feeding
- The ability to problem-solve and deal with unpredictable situations
- The ability to demonstrate patience and use thoughtful language
- Coaching and mentorship skills. Lead by example and support our family member to continue learning new skills, make connections in the community, and the ability to search for jobs.
- An openness to learning new ideas
- The ability to exhibit a great deal of patience
- The ability to take time to listen and observe
- The ability to work independently in unstructured environments and to employ effective time management skills and the ability to work within a team
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Candidate must be able to pass a background and vulnerable sector check
