Light Olives Childcare Center is a newly established, licensed childcare center in Port Colborne, Ontario, preparing to open in Summer 2026. We are committed to providing a nurturing, engaging, and inclusive environment where children feel safe to explore, learn, and grow.
We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced Cook to join our founding team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a supportive and forward-thinking workplace, where your skills and creativity will help shape our programs and culture from the very beginning.
The Cook is responsible for the safe preparation, handling, storage, and service of food in accordance with Niagara Region Public Health, the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), and all applicable food safety legislation.
Food Preparation & Food Safety
- Prepare and serve nutritious snacks and lunches in accordance with the approved weekly menu and Canada’s Food Guide
- Follow safe food handling practices at all times, including proper cooking, cooling, reheating, holding, and storage temperatures
- Prevent cross-contamination by using appropriate food handling techniques, utensils, and surfaces
- Ensure strict compliance with all food allergy and dietary restriction protocols, including allergy-safe preparation and labeling
- Ensure food is prepared in a manner that is age-appropriate and safe for children
Temperature Monitoring & Recordkeeping
- Take and record daily temperature logs for:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Hot and cold foods, as required
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date kitchen records, including:
- Food temperature logs
- Cleaning and sanitizing logs
- Inventory records
- Food purchase receipts
Cleaning, Sanitizing & Infection Prevention
- Clean and sanitize all food contact surfaces, equipment, utensils, and appliances using approved sanitizing agents and methods
- Follow proper cleaning and sanitizing schedules in accordance with Niagara Region Public Health requirements
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen at all times
- Ensure garbage is removed daily and disposed of in designated waste areas
- Wear clean protective clothing, appropriate footwear, and hair restraints while handling food
Inventory & Kitchen Management
- Conduct weekly inventory of food and kitchen supplies
- Prepare procurement lists to ensure adequate food supply and minimize food waste
- Ensure food is stored off the floor, properly labeled, and within expiry dates
- Take full responsibility for the kitchen and all kitchen-related operations
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Comply with all requirements of:
- Niagara Region Public Health
- Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA)
- Centre policies and procedures
- Report illness, injury, or food safety concerns immediately to the Supervisor
- Exclude themselves from food preparation duties if experiencing symptoms of illness, in accordance with Public Health exclusion guidelines
Additional Duties
- Assist with maintaining overall centre cleanliness as required, including:
- Vacuuming carpets
- Cleaning and mopping the lobby, washrooms, and stairways
- End-of-day garbage collection
- Assist with the care and supervision of children when required, under the direction of supervisory staff

- Exhibit emotional maturity, patience, and cultural sensitivity
- Maintain excellent personal hygiene in accordance with Public Health standards
- Demonstrate understanding of How Does Learning Happen? and its application within a childcare environment
Qualifications Required (Public Health & CCEYA )
- Valid Food Handler Certification (mandatory)
- Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Standard First Aid and CPR Level C
- Up-to-date immunizations, as required by Public Health
- Two-step TB test or current medical clearance
- Previous experience working in a licensed child care or daycare setting (preferred)
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Casual
Pay: $17.20-$21.00 per hour
