Vacancy Status: This is for a current opening.
Compensation: $120,000 - $135,000
Job Description
Responsibilities: What you will do/ What you will own
Fund Tax Compliance & Accuracy
- Deliver accurate, on-time tax distributions, T3/T5 slips, and fund tax returns across the full Purpose fund lineup
- Own the determination of fund-level distributable income and capital gains across all fund structures, with AI-assisted modelling reviewed and approved by you
- Lead all CRA correspondence and technical positions with professionalism and precision, protecting Purpose’s regulatory standing
Tax Forecasting & Provisioning
- Build and maintain best-in-class tax forecasting and provisioning practices throughout the tax year, shifting the function from reactive to predictive
- Develop the AI-augmented oversight models that give the business real-time visibility into fund-level tax positions – not just year-end snapshots
- Surface tax risks and opportunities early enough to allow meaningful management action, not just reporting after the fact
Product Tax Advisory & Innovation
- Partner with management on new product development, providing tax structuring guidance that turns tax considerations from a constraint into a competitive advantage
- Lead the tax design and implementation for tax-outcome-focused products, including structure selection, ongoing monitoring, and investor disclosure
- Support cross-functional teams on prospectus filings, fund launches, and regulatory updates with expert tax input that accelerates timelines
What success looks like in your first year
- Zero tax errors on investor-facing outputs. Every T3, T5, and fund tax return delivered accurately and on schedule across all fund structures, with no CRA correspondence arising from Purpose’s own filing errors
- Forecasting moved from annual to continuous. You have built or materially improved the tax forecasting infrastructure so the business has real-time visibility into fund-level tax positions throughout the year – not just at year-end
- AI governance embedded. All automated tax modelling has documented human review and sign-off controls in place, satisfying audit requirements and internal standards
- Trusted product partner. The product and management teams actively involve you in new fund structuring conversations from day one – not after decisions have already been made
- At least one process materially improved. You’ve identified, built, and deployed an enhancement to the tax function that reduces cycle time, improves accuracy, or increases the team’s capacity – and you can point to the before and after
What AI does so you don’t have to
Purpose is deploying AI across every workflow where it outperforms manual effort. In this role, that means you will inherit – and continue to build – an AI-augmented tax and compliance stack. Specifically, AI will handle:
- Efficient tax forecasting runs across Mutual Fund Trusts, Mutual Fund Corporations, and Limited Partnerships
- First-pass distribution calculations for distributable income and capital gains, flagging exceptions and edge cases for human review
- Tax slip management and cross-validation against source fund data, reducing manual reconciliation cycles
- CRA regulatory change monitoring, surfacing relevant Income Tax Act and CRA guidance updates requiring professional interpretation
- Model maintenance and anomaly detection across the tax oversight models your team relies on, alerting before errors propagate
What only you can do
The irreplaceable core of this role – the judgment, accountability, and expertise that no model can replicate:
- Own tax correctness across Purpose’s entire fund lineup – Mutual Fund Trusts, Mutual Fund Corporations, and Limited Partnerships. Your sign-off means something.
- Exercise professional tax judgment where the Income Tax Act meets the complexity of multi-class fund structures, novel product designs, and the grey areas CRA hasn’t yet opined on
- Lead CRA relationships – correspondence, audits, and technical positions that require a credible, professional voice, not a template
- Shape new product tax architecture alongside management, advising on structuring decisions before launch rather than fixing problems after
- Govern AI outputs – reviewing, stress-testing, and improving the automated forecasting and allocation models that your team depends on
- Translate tax complexity into clear guidance for product, compliance, and operations teams who need to act on your expertise without getting lost in it
Qualifications: What you will bring
- 3–5 years of investment fund tax experience within the Canadian market
- Deep working knowledge of the Income Tax Act as it applies to Mutual Fund Trusts, Mutual Fund Corporations, and Limited Partnerships
- Direct experience completing fund distributions, T3/T5 tax slips, and fund tax returns end-to-end
- CPA designation (or actively enrolled with a clear timeline to completion)
What will set you apart
- Experience with AI-assisted tax modelling, workflow automation, or data tools (Python, Excel VBA, RPA) – you don’t need to have built them, but you’ve used and interrogated them
- Background in tax-outcome-focused fund products (target distribution, return-of-capital structures, tax-managed mandates)
- Experience advising on new fund structuring or product tax design alongside a management or product team
- CFA designation or progress toward it, demonstrating investment product fluency that complements the tax expertise
- Track record of proactively improving a tax process or model, not just operating the existing one
How this role connects to what we believe
Owner’s Mindset – You treat Purpose’s tax obligations as if they were your own firm’s. You find the problem before the CRA does.
Innovation – You actively push the tax function toward real-time intelligence and AI-augmented decision-making. Maintaining the status quo is not success in this role.
Courage – You take clear, defensible positions on complex tax questions and communicate them with conviction – to management, to CRA, and to the teams who depend on your expertise.
