JUNIOR ACCOUNTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
The Synod of the Diocese of Niagara
The people of the Diocese of Niagara are called to life and compelled. Our Synod office is located in the heart of Hamilton, Ontario, serving more than 80 parishes and missions across Guelph and Hamilton, the regions of Niagara and Halton, as well as Wellington, Haldimand and Dufferin counties.
Our dedicated and innovative team is seeking a full-time, permanent, Junior Accountant to expand our finance team. We are in search of a financial professional who pays close attention to detail, displays sound judgement, the ability to meet deadlines, is comfortable working independently and possesses strong communication skills that will work well with our internal and external stakeholders to join our team.
Primary Role
To support the diocesan finance team across all functions and to create streamlined and efficient processes. Producing financial reporting for diocesan missions and ministries, build and maintain Excel‑based analyses and dashboards, and deliver responsive service to our parishes, programs, vendors, and staff, all in accordance with diocesan policies and not‑for‑profit accounting standards.
Works Hours
Regular hours will typically be weekdays Monday-Friday; with the occasional need for some evening or weekend work to complete the role responsibilities.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Completion of a college or university program in accounting, finance or business.
- Intermediate knowledge of Excel: Pivot Tables, lookups, data analysis
- Familiarity with standard ERPs and tools (e.g. QuickBooks, SAP, Sage, Xero, Wave)
- Strong foundational knowledge of AP/AR/GL and reconciliations
- Ability and willingness to provide a clear CRJMC police check
Preferred
- Experience using Power Query in Excel
- Working knowledge of Not-for-Profit Accounting obtained through academic or professional experience
- Professional experience using QuickBooks Online and/or Sage 300
- Experience preparing supporting documentation for auditors
Required Outcomes and Responsibilities
1st Quarter
- Work with current finance team to learn how to process accounts receivable, accounts payable, produce bank reconciliations and develop an understanding of the investment process
- Able to produce AR reports for executive management
- Streamline the reporting processes for the missions
- Successfully add new employee profiles for payroll and accurately enter timesheets
- Participate in the payroll review process
- Complete diocesan and legislatively mandated employee training modules
2nd Quarter
- Prepare bank reconciliations
- Assist with annual insurance renewal process, invoice runs/credits, and insurer statement reconciliations.
- Assist with charitable tax receipting and develop of plan for implementation of the tracking of donations in 2027
- Support annual T4/T4A preparation and related payroll year end reconciliation process
3rd Quarter
- Develop process flow charts
- Recommend at least 5 viable solutions for identified areas of improvement or increased efficiency
- Perform preview of 2 pay cycles with the support of the Director of Finance
- Maintain Diocesan Mission & Ministry assessment spreadsheets, monthly invoicing, and EFT files; complete related reconciliations.
1st Year
- Assist in preparing annual operating and capital budgets; produce periodic forecasts and variance reports.
- Update investment spreadsheets and assist with investment statements and unit‑value/admin‑fee calculations.
- Perform bookkeeping for Bishop’s Company and Anglican Church Ministries Foundation of Niagara
- Develop an implementation plan and financial implications of at least 2 of the proposed solutions
- Manage the implementation and provide continuous improvement of processes.
- Develop, implement a process and maintain tracking for the endowed portion of investments
- Precheck payroll register review and approval
- Begin the SOP documentation process for all financial processes, and the updating of current documentation regarding our control processes.
Key Performance Indicators
- Demonstrate an understanding and navigation of the payroll system, including the addition of new employees
- Preparation of T4/T4As and government related payroll filings completed by deadlines
- Zero errors on the payroll register and payroll ready by deadline
- Missional financial reporting produced for the Missioners by deadlines
- Quality and thorough monthly financial reports produced for the executive team
- Financial process solutions that demonstrate increased efficiency
- Accurate SOPs documented for financial processes
- Successful completion of required training modules
- Effective communication with staff and other stakeholders
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience (expected range $55,000-$65,000) and includes pension and benefit plan participation.
