POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Thi Kwasun Community Youth Program Coordinator , the Community Youth Program Mentor will primarily be responsible for youth program coordination and youth guidance and support. Thi K’wasun Youth Program has been adapted to include Right to Play content; to deliver community-driven, culturally-relevant play-based programming designed to enhance leadership, self-confidence, and self-efficacy among children and youth. Through cooperation we create safe and inclusive spaces where children and youth can share their ideas, their hopes and their fears, and learn the skills to become positive agents of change.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with youth in a therapeutic and motivational approach with an emphasis on 4 domains of wellness ( Education, Physical Literacy, Cultural Identity, Emotional Regulation)
- Support the planning and implementation of events and initiatives
- Support Youth Drop In and Structured programming ( Workshops, Games, Sports, Art, Field Trips, land-based learning)
- Build partnerships and program awareness
- Demonstrate and share skills in administration and program evaluation responsibilities
- Shares some responsibilities/duties with other admin/coordinator team members
- Follow established procedures and at times be required to use independent judgement
- Interact with many levels of people and be able to respond with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy
- Respect the confidentiality that the position requires, including working in partnership with many departments
- Participate in upcoming fundraisers and meetings
- Assess needs for Thi Kwasun Programming and work with the Thi Kwasun Coordinator in creative planning
- Bus driving to and from scheduled activities. Willing to obtain Class 4 driver’s license.
- Demonstrate flexibility when needed and carry out other duties as required
QUALITIES & QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum College Diploma, ongoing or complete in the any of the following areas: Community Services (Child and Youth Worker; Recreation and Leisure; Social Service Worker; Early Childhood Education); or equivalent community and/or youth work experience. Studies in teaching and education.
- Knowledge and/or education in Indigenous culture and worldviews as it is applied to Child and Youth Development (Education, Family and Child Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Services, Health, etc.
- A professional, adaptable communication style with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others.
- High level of emotional intelligence, patience and integrity.
- The ability to demonstrate composure in high-pressure situations.
- A resourceful and organized individual with excellent time management abilities.
- The ability to deliver negative information tactfully and diplomatically when needed. Acts ethically and handles sensitive information with confidentiality.
- A team-oriented employee with a positive, approachable attitude.
- Someone who has training in how to effectively facilitate leadership and recreation programming for young people
- Experience in working with youth and children in recreation, arts, and culture programming.
- Experience in coordinating large events for 50+ people.
- Knowledge of how to write and complete reports and to collect various program data and statistics.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record check completed.
