Job Overview
The Educational Assistant Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to students enrolled in the Educational Assistant program, including the practicum-based EAP stream where applicable. The instructor prepares students to support children and youth with diverse developmental, cognitive, behavioural, communication, physical, sensory, and mental health needs in Ontario schools and community-based educational settings.
The instructor plans and delivers theoretical and practical course content, facilitates applied learning activities and simulations, evaluates student achievement, and supports students in developing the professional knowledge, skills, and conduct required to work collaboratively with teachers, families, specialists, and multidisciplinary teams. The instructor is expected to create an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment aligned with approved curriculum, institutional policies, and current educational practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Course Delivery
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons (including weekly lecture slide) aligned with the approved EA curriculum and current industry best practices.
- Deliver instruction in areas such as child and adolescent development, exceptionalities, inclusive education, differentiated instruction, behaviour support, mental health, assistive technology, assessment, documentation, personal care, and professional practice.
- Facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning using a variety of instructional methods that support diverse adult learners.
- Use lectures, case studies, role-playing, simulations, demonstrations, group activities, and applied exercises to connect theory with educational practice.
- Deliver instruction using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, culturally safe, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approaches.
- Incorporate current legislation, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends in mental health and addictions into classroom instruction.
2. Student Assessment and Support
- Evaluate student learning through assignments, quizzes, presentations, simulations, practical evaluations, and examinations.
- Provide timely, constructive, and individualized feedback to support academic achievement and professional development.
- Monitor student progress and identify learners requiring additional academic or personal support.
- Encourage critical thinking, reflective practice, ethical decision-making, and professional accountability.
3. Practical Skills Development
- Facilitate practical learning related to classroom support, observation, documentation, behaviour management, de-escalation, assistive technology, and differentiated instruction.
- Prepare EAP students for practicum by reviewing workplace expectations, confidentiality, safety, documentation, communication, and professional conduct.
- Reinforce workplace safety standards, infection prevention practices, WHMIS requirements, and quality assurance procedures.
- Where assigned, review student reflection logs, skills checklists, supervisor feedback, and practicum documentation.
- Participate in practicum monitoring, site visits, student evaluations, and communication with placement partners as assigned.
4. Curriculum and Program Development
- Participate in curriculum review and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Recommend updates to course materials to reflect changes in current Educational Assistant practices, legislation, technology, and industry standards.
- Support program accreditation, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance initiatives as required.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and institutional committees.
- Support regulatory, compliance, audit, and program-review requirements as assigned.
5. Classroom Management
- Foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
- Encourage critical thinking, professional judgment, teamwork, and effective communication.
- Serve as a positive professional role model for future Educational Assistants.
- Maintain regular communication with students regarding course expectations, academic progress, and available support services.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Education, Special Education, Child and Youth Care, Developmental Services, Social Services, Psychology, Behavioural Science, Early Childhood Education, Educational Assistance, or a related field.
- A Bachelor of Education, Ontario teaching certification, Educational Assistant diploma, Developmental Services Worker diploma, Child and Youth Care diploma, or equivalent relevant credential is preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience working in schools, special education, developmental services, child and youth services, community education, or a related setting.
- Direct experience supporting children or youth with exceptionalities, including developmental, cognitive, behavioural, communication, physical, sensory, or mental health needs.
- Experience implementing Individual Education Plans, accommodations, modifications, behaviour plans, or differentiated learning strategies is strongly preferred.
- Experience collaborating with teachers, families, school administrators, and multidisciplinary professionals.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Strong digital literacy and proficiency using learning management systems, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and online teaching technologies.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and frameworks, including:
- Ontario Education Act
- Ontario Human Rights Code
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
- Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Child, Youth and Family Services Act
- PPM 81 and other relevant Ministry of Education directives
- Privacy, confidentiality, duty-to-report, and school safety requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate-level education in education, psychology, special education, applied behaviour analysis, counselling, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Postsecondary teaching experience or experience facilitating adult education.
- Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or online teaching.
- Specialized certification or training in areas such as Applied Behaviour Analysis, autism support, non-violent crisis intervention, mental health, trauma-informed practice, assistive technology, or behaviour management is considered an asset.

Working Conditions
- Part-time position with potential evening and weekend teaching based on program schedules.
- Courses are delivered primarily online through synchronous and asynchronous learning platforms.
- Ability to conduct site visits and participate in field placement supervision, where assigned.
- Participation in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and program events as required.
