Urban Life Solutions has an opening available for an Equipment Operator/Lead Hand position in our Calgary office within the Landscape Construction division. Under the direction of the Superintendent and Operations Manager, this position will be responsible for leading and supervising a team of up to 4 crew members while performing a variety of tasks and hauling/operating our equipment to assist in the construction of commercial and government (municipal, provincial and federal) landscapes
Responsibilities
- Demonstrating safety leadership and safe work practices at all times
- Working in accordance with ULS policies and procedure
- Providing exceptional customer service and maintaining ULS client relationships
- Demonstrating strong leadership skills and overseeing a team of up to 4 crew members
- Ability to drive, load, and secure equipment on trucks and trailers
- Ability to read construction plans and layouts; Construction/installation of various structures including earthwork, patios, decks, waterfalls, retaining walls, carpentry, interlocking pavers and water features
- Material ordering
- Rough and fine grading as well as laying sod and rock work, planting, soil placement
- Planting trees, shrubs, perennials and willow staking, among other landscape remediation type tasks
- Operating and troubleshooting a variety of equipment including motorized hand tools and some ride on equipment with valid operating certifications (backhoe, skid steer, loaders, tandems, sanders, excavators); Certificates available through training at Urban Life Solutions.
- Proper loading and driving of trucks and trailers
- Overseeing hazard assessments and completing equipment pre and post trip inspections
- Overall quality assurance on delivery and completion of tasks
- Operating equipment for Snow removal
- Additional tasks as required
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of previous experience in a similar role
- Experience with operating skid steers, loaders and excavators
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Minimum Class 5 Driver’s License and proof of satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Operating certifications for various types of equipment and tools
- Skilled use of common hand and power tools
- Ability to complete measurements and mathematical calculations
- Exceptional Customer Service skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- Ability to maintain simple records and make verbal reports
- Legally authorized to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous landscaping, snow removal and/or construction experience is an asset
- Ability to take direction, give direction, learn and work independently as well as part of a team
- Punctual and dependable
- Motivated and energetic team player with an attention to detail and great work ethic
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy intensive tasks for extended periods of time
- Working in a variety of outdoor environments with the ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures, noise, dust and wet work environments
- Physically demanding position: significant standing, walking, squatting/crouching, and driving
- Operating a variety of heavy equipment and tools
- Repetitive Motions
- Ability to regularly lift, carry, push and pull weights of up to 100 lbs
- Mon– Fri, 10-12 hours per day. Occasional weekend work
