Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Preschool Assistant Teacher to support the development and education of young children in a nurturing classroom environment. The Assistant Teacher supports the daily operations and educational strategy of the school. Guided by the organizational motto, "Learn through play," the Assistant Teacher works collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to maintain an inclusive, safe, stimulating, and fun environment that prepares children socially, emotionally, and academically for kindergarten.
Responsibilities:
Play-Based Curriculum Delivery
- Embody the “Learn through play” philosophy across all activities.
- Assist in delivering dynamic, age-appropriate programming.
- Encourage independence, and academic, social, and emotional skills needed for kindergarten.
- Assist in maintaining the balance between teacher-led and child-led activities by assisting the Lead Teacher during teacher-led activities, and engaging actively during child-led free play.
Inclusion, Assessment & Adaptive Learning
- Foster equal learning opportunities for all children.
- Help monitor each child’s developmental milestone progress and unique learning needs.
- Execute activity modifications designed by the Lead Teacher.
- Support language acquisition strategies for English Language Learners.
Relationships, Leadership & Professionalism
- Treat all children, parents, staff, and visitors with fairness and respect.
- Collaborate with the Lead Teacher to provide a cohesive, fun, positive, and enriching learning environment.
- Maintain positive and professional boundaries with families and staff at all times.
- Direct parent concerns or board matters to the Lead Teacher.
General Duties
- Ensure the safety of children enrolled in the program at all times.
- Assist in ensuring the classroom meets all Alberta child care safety, health, and licensing standards. Report any licensing or health hazards immediately to the Lead Teacher.
- Adhere to all policies set out by the Blue Quill Playschool Board of Directors.
- Attend scheduled board meetings.
- Assist the Board of Directors with operational and administrative tasks or projects, or school community events as required.
- Assist in orientations, open houses, and classroom showings.
- Help set up the classroom and activities prior to the start of each class.
- Monitor the teacher email account and Brightwheel daily as requested by the Lead Teacher.
- Share classroom cleaning duties, including sanitizing, wiping, and vacuuming.
Qualifications
- Must hold a valid Early Childhood Education (ECE) Level 1 or 2 certification issued by the Government of Alberta.
- A clear and valid Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
- Required to be independent and confident in their abilities as there is no supervisor on site.
This is a contract position starting September 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027.
Hours: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8:30am - 4:00pm, Tuesday/Thursday 8:30am - 12:15pm
Pay: $16.00-$19.00 per hour
