Pipelayer Job Description
Job Summary
The Pipelayer is responsible for setting and verifying grade, interpreting construction plans, and working closely with pipe crews to ensure proper elevation and alignment for underground utilities. This role is critical in supporting water and sewer installation and rehabilitation projects by maintaining accurate grade control and facilitating efficient workflow on site.
Key Responsibilities
· Set and maintain grade according to project specifications and survey data.
· Interpret site plans and construction drawings to determine grade requirements.
· Collaborate with pipe crews to ensure proper trench depth, slope, and alignment.
· Use laser levels and other tools to verify and monitor elevations and grades during excavation and pipe installation.
· Work closely with mainline excavator operator especially when excavating around existing underground utilities.
· Ensure pipe joint inspection has been completed
· Maintain clear communication with site supervisors, equipment operators, and other team members.
· Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
Reporting Responsibilities
· Reports directly to the Foreman
· Reviews and signs off on daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs.
· Promptly report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards, or unsafe conditions to the Foreman.
· Completes and submits all required incident and near-miss documentation.
Qualifications
· Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices.
· Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
· Excellent communication and organizational skills.
· Valid driver’s license
· Experience with SiteDocs or similar reporting tools is an asset.
Physical Demands
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing on uneven terrain.
· Operation of heavy equipment and tools as needed, including frequent sitting and operating machinery for extended periods.
· Manual dexterity to control levers and foot pedals.
· Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.
· Ability to climb in and out of equipment safely and frequently.
Work Environment
· Work is performed outdoors on active construction sites, involving excavation, pipe installation, water and sewer installation, rehabilitation projects, and heavy machinery.
· Extended periods of physical activity during 8–12 hour shifts, with potential for overtime including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as required by project schedules.
· Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.
