The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people.
The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is looking for an experienced Maintenance Worker who has open availability. The Maintenance Worker is responsible for ensuring safety and security of the building, completing small repairs, and ensuring the building is up to cleanliness standards during the day / or night. This position will report to the Director of Operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates with Director of Operations on repairs, cleaning and other maintenance related duties needed for VAFCS.
- Performs cleaning activities such as dusting, mopping etc.
- Performs minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, filling gaps on walls etc.
- Completes cleaning procedures such as disinfecting, sanitizing, PPE etc. when necessary
- Checks control panels and electrical wiring to identify issues, replacing plugs, and replacing balusters etc.
- Installs appliances and equipment.
- Performs basic plumbing repairs.
- Does garden/yard upkeep by mowing lawn, collecting trash gardening, etc.
- Conducts maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, painting, repairing drywall etc.
- Inspects and troubleshoots equipment and systems (e.g. ventilation).
- Checks functionality of safety systems (e.g. fire alarm).
- Collaborate with workers and other professionals during renovations.
- Reports to a Director of Operations for issues.
- Directs Emergency personnel such as Fire Department / Police to point of interest such as a fire or situation.
- Uses a computer to document repairs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years experience as a Maintenance person or other related Janitorial experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Successful completion of an apprenticeship is an asset.
- Class 4 or 5 Driver Licence and clean abstract is considered an asset.
- Candidates with Building Service Worker Certification is an asset.
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
- Ability to clean in a timely manner.
- Ability to complete basic labour duties.
- Experience using hand and electrical tools.
- Ability to read technical manuals and drawings.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- First Nations, Metis, Inuit or Aboriginal ancestry is preferred
- Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses
- Interact with clients, family members, employees, visitors, and government agencies
- Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and supporting guest.
- These positions require union membership with the BC General Employees Union
