Altima Cabinet Works Ltd. is a well established Winnipeg company, serving mainly the Winnipeg market for multi-unit projects, commercial millwork and single residential projects for over 25 years.
Functional Responsibility:
The Painter Assistant plays a key role in supporting the finishing team by preparing wood components for high‑quality paint and stain applications. This position involves sanding, detailing, material handling, and maintaining a clean and efficient finishing environment.
Principle Duties:
Preparation Work
- Sand raw wood and MDF parts using orbital sanders and hand sanding techniques.
- Ensure all components are smooth, clean, and ready for finishing.
- Fill seams, joints, and imperfections with wood filler.
- Wipe, tack, and prepare surfaces prior to primer or paint application.
Finishing Support
- Assist painter with mixing stains, primers, paints, toners, and topcoats.
- Help move items in and out of the spray booth and drying area.
- Apply basic finishes such as wiping stains or sealers under guidance.
- Label, organize, and track parts throughout the finishing process.
Shop & Equipment Maintenance
- Clean sanding tools, spray equipment, and finishing materials daily.
- Replace booth filters and maintain dust-free work areas.
- Keep materials and supplies stocked and organized.
- Follow proper safety protocols when handling chemicals and finishes.
Quality Control
- Inspect parts for sanding scratches, contamination, or flaws.
- Re-sand and correct defects prior to finishing.
- Communicate any issues to the Lead Painter or Finishing Supervisor.
Required Skills & Attributes
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn finishing techniques.
- Ability to use hand tools, sanders, and basic shop equipment.
- Good attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship.
- Ability to lift and move cabinet components (up to 50 lbs).
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in woodworking, cabinetry, or furniture finishing is an asset.
- Knowledge of water‑based and/or solvent‑based finishing products.
- Familiarity with spray booth operations.
Working Conditions
- Shop environment with exposure to sanding dust, paints, and finishes.
- Required use of PPE such as respirators, hearing protection, and gloves.
- Standing, bending, and lifting for most of the workday.
- We only use water base finishes
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.00-$22.00 per hour
